Modern.

Seriously. The covenant might be incompetant, but you think they could fail to conquer modern earth?
If they are limiting themselves to ground forces only [Which the games suggest they are for Earth] then any conquest would be a horribly bloody and drawnout battle for them.
IIRC, the Covenant fleet did bombard points of the planet's surface, although they specifically avoided specific areas, like New Mombassa. There are obvious signs of "glassing" visible from orbital shots in the trailer, and I suspect the game itself, as well. Even a handful of mutli-gigaton plasma torpedoes going off over cities is bound to give the defenders pause; of course, if the Covenant is still simply attempting to exterminate humanity, the resistance will be suicidally fierce, at least in most quarters.

I think those bastards succeeded in their invasion, if the 'Halo 3' trailer is any indication.
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

They have never attempted to invade modern earth, so they don't count. Especially since I don't see how they could fail to invade us when we can't shoot back at their ships.

This may change when we get to see the nBSG earth.

How about the Yeerks? They were succeeding pretty well until that Andalite gave a couple of humans some super-tech.

yuck.... in my last year of highschool I was forced to read these by my English teacher instead of the Patrick Robinson novels I wanted to (I was a little ahead of my age in reading) as thats what people my age were reading (or at least those who'd gained some literary skills) Animorphs were the new thing... personally I thought they sucked balls...

hmmm from a glance at my bookshelf I spy my copy of Doom: Hell on Earth... the Doom Aliens did a fairly good job of taking over Earth.. and then lost it to a lone marine...

The problem the aliens in the Doom book suffered is rather like that of The Race. When they scouted us we were in IIRC the Rennaisance hence all the demon looking engineered soldiers ready to rampage and savage a bunch of people with at best primitive gunpowder weapons.. then they get back and we have rocket launchers, miniguns, and the BFG 9000.. sucks to be them.

Though they still managed to take over for the most part IIRC.

Uh, Animorph spoilers for those who actually care.

The Yeerks plan of 'slow infiltration to maximize hosts' was intentionally contrived by Visser One for sentimental reasons. Visser Three's plan of 'crush the puny slaves' would have worked much quicker. The Andalites were tied up with the whole 'prevent Yeerks from acquiring psionic water beings' front. I mean really, oh darn the humans are at measly 2 billion after the war. You could fix that in twenty years, which is about how long the infiltration plan had been going on.

Also, Animorphs was a nice soft SF universe for the teenage reading level. I mean they actually killed people, and the aliens were (somewhat) ALIEN. The Andalite Chronicles and the Ellemist are the only ones I bother to reread as their stand alone.
