Re: SGU 106: Water (Spoilers)
Honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if the REAL value of Destiny isn't the navigational data it's accumulated but some other secret that Rush is keeping to himself. There's been a few little hints he knows more about the Destiny than he's letting on.

Re: SGU 106: Water (Spoilers)
Just imagine what would've happened if anyone was stupid enough to walk trough to the ice planet without checking out the atmosphere first, they would've died long before they could have managed to dial back out. It would suck to run out of Kinos...Manus Celer Dei wrote:Honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if the REAL value of Destiny isn't the navigational data it's accumulated but some other secret that Rush is keeping to himself. Re: SGU 106: Water (Spoilers)
Upon rewatching the episode, they have a throwaway line about sending them another dial-up remote through the gate, and the situation is never mentioned again, so I guess it is implied that those two were brought back offscreen. Wich is a shitty way of doing it, I would've preferred the Kino they were carrying relaying their sudden deaths back to Eli or something.
Oh, and that Pod I mentioned detatching, that's from the third episode.
I hadn't also noticed that the Destiny's FTL drive doesn't use hyperspace. Intriguing.
As an aside, I don't get why the floating balls are called Kinos. Some pop culture reference I'm missing here?

Re: SGU 106: Water (Spoilers)
The thing that bothers me is the crew already know how to keep Destiny fixed in position, they just have to keep an active wormhole engaged for the Destiny to refrain from jumping. The WH can be tied up for up to 38 minutes and the last time they locked the gate open it took some time for Destiny to re-engage to FTL when it shut off.
Enough time to redial the gate and tie it up again I would expect. Thus, they could have dialed the gate, threw a bag in and topped up the suits to get more ice, then shut the gate off and have someone quickly redial Destiny and tie up the gate again. At the very least it would have made sense to try and test how feasible it would be to do.
As for the Stargates themselves, we have always seen Stargates require a DHD to work, the Kinos apparantly work as dialing devices but what is supplying the power for the gates to dial ?
I would have prefered the addition of DHDs rather than Kinos due to the extremely fragile lifeline they represent. Lose the Kino and your effectively dead like those two that went to the other planet. Incidentally, I expect to see the crew of Destiny attempt to dial up that gate and it seems highly unlikely they will be unable to do so if they can use a Kino to do it.
In theory Atlantis has provided Earth the ultimate means of exploration via. wormhole drive and has databanks full of information that can slowly be assimilated over the decades including Ascension so really... what can Destiny do to top that ?
Short of the Destiny FTLing into the Star Wars galaxy <Cue for SG vs. SW> I cant see Destiny being THAT important a discovery in itself. Although, I am curious how they intend to deal with the Ori situation. The Ascended Ancients 'shielded' up to 3 galaxies from the Ori so shouldnt we expect to see the work of the Ori and OTHER ascended creatures out here where they would have free reign to manipulate and look without intervention ?
Incidentally, I wonder if that is why the Ancients relied on automatic ships and never went to the Destiny to explore since they would risk attracting the Ori.

Re: SGU 106: Water (Spoilers)
Remember how the whole ship began shaking when it was time to depart? I don't think tying it in place would be a good idea. As for throwing things through, I suspect the failsafe only works if an actual living being is going through. In any case, it'd be quite risky to try and do such a thing, since a miscalculation would mean the Destiny would jump to FTL and leave anyone on the other side stranded, not to mention that maybe the dial-out system locks up as part of the departure sequence. Too many ifs in this plan.PREDATOR490 wrote:The thing that bothers me is the crew already know how to keep Destiny fixed in position, they just have to keep an active wormhole engaged for the Destiny to refrain from jumping.
We've seen gates dialed from handheld devices before, or from PuddleJumpers, besides, these gates are different, maybe they have a power source integrated within them.As for the Stargates themselves, we have always seen Stargates require a DHD to work, the Kinos apparantly work as dialing devices but what is supplying the power for the gates to dial ?
Rewatch the first episode, when they show the ship's trajectory. The second or third dot is pegassus. Destiny has gone further into the universe than any other ancient vessel, just the amount of data within its logs is invaluable, not to mention the possibility of establishing an intergalactic gate network.what can Destiny do to top that ?

Whether they are dead or not, I'm reasonably sure they aren't BACK.

It was specifically stated they could not make contact with them and they weren't brought back for that reason.

No reference, Kino simply means "cinema" in German and Russian, so Eli's just calling them cameras and being a language nerd about it.LordOskuro wrote:As an aside, I don't get why the floating balls are called Kinos. Some pop culture reference I'm missing here?

The stargates are not dialed via the kinos but with the remote used to control the kinos.PREDATOR490 wrote:As for the Stargates themselves, we have always seen Stargates require a DHD to work, the Kinos apparantly work as dialing devices but what is supplying the power for the gates to dial ?

And I think that the Destiny has a way to produce more kinos if supplied with the resources (Eli took one out of a dispenser that looked like a bubblegum machine)
The "Tatooine"-stargate (the ice planet from Water was canonically called "Hoth" )from Air had a base that looked artificial - more like the floor of Atlantis or the Destiny and not like stone (Milky Way/Pegasus).
While Milky-Way-stargates have the rotation mechanics within their ring and Pegasus-Stargates appear to lack mechanic parts it seems that the Destiny-stargates have the rotation mechanics inside that base. The ring does rotate as a whole unlike the MW-stargate with its inner ring.
So either the D-stargate is the oldest version of the known 3 modells or it was especially designed for the Destiny mission.
If the former:
- Destiny was started before the Milky Way galaxy received the gates that are still in use. The ancient popsicle Ayana (same actress as Young's wife by the way) from SG1 "Frozen" was found in a layer of ice assumed to be 3 million+ years old. She was present when Atlantis left Earth. So we know that Destiny is at least 3 million years old if it was launched and then forgotten becaues of the plague.
- Destiny-gates might offer an advantage for the mission. Less resources needed for the construction or no external DHD for security purposes...

Re: SGU 106: Water (Spoilers)
Just after shooting the third guy and preventing him from stepping through, they close the gate and Eli says "You just stranded them!" to wich the soldier replies "We'll send them another remote later".Anguirus wrote: When was that?

The lack of any statements as to the fate of these two makes me suspect that they've been contacted and saved offscreen, or that the relevant scene was cut, of course.

I got the impression that almost immediatly Eli was dialing the planet and trying to contact them via his radio. Lack of response that quick suggests something got them very quickly since they had determined that air was okay and temps were okay.Zac Naloen wrote:Then later they tried to contact them but couldn't, they never rescued them.
Me thinks they became hungry critter food. Stargates are not quiet, the opening of one could certainly draw the attention of a predator.

Yeah. For the moment, they're MIA and presumably dead, but I'm wondering if they might reappear in some form down the road. Re: SGU 106: Water (Spoilers)
..Anyway, Water wasn't a bad episode, it felt a lot like Aliens, the aliens are actual ALIEN beings, and for a stargate, its bloody, a lot like the Showtime seasons. I feel its a solid 3, not TERRIBLE but not a 4 or a 5, middle of the road. If the filler is this decent this series will be a nice thing to watch on fridays!
