Aye, early Judge Dredd pauldron were fairly small, and the helmet had a slightly different look

As shown here.

It wasn't till roundabout the Cursed Earth/Judge Cal era that the uniform started to change.

Now there's a thing, I wonder if they'll have the SJS who had some really ridiculous looking uniforms in the day.

Simon Bisely, who I like, did that crap with the huge pauldrons and made them very popular, You guys aren't clamoring for the equally huge shoulders he would have underneath them are you?

He just needs a little more chin and I think he would be perfect.

Karl Urban's chin could look Dreddy enough from certain angles. Have a look at this.

The uniform pauldrons did get larger and also lost the line of stars along the edge of them. My remembrance of Judge Dredd though is patchy, the ones round the era of the Apocalypse War, the Judge Child, Judge Deaths early appearances and so on were fine and carried on to the Judge Anderson ones as well.

I've read some later stories, and the story where Dredd assesses Rookie Judge Kraken and the Democracy Now stories went way over the top with them, it doesn't help that the artist changed mid story either. The uniforms seemed a bit more sensible round about the time of Necropolis.

I've always retconned it in my head as Dredd having a massively ostentatious and OTT uniform because he's Dredd.

He wants the perps to know exactly who's rolling up.

The Judges from this movie look "real" in the same way that Batman Begins Batman looked real, as opposed to the Burton designs.
The Carl Urban Dredd also looks like he'd be able to kick the shit out of Stallone Dredd, before breakfast.

I've got some good hopes for this movie. It may be more down to earth, but at least the designs look like the director has his head screwed on right.

If this movie is more in line with the comics I want to see it.

In the comics are the judges supposed to be bulletproof officers of doom, or is it more skill and numbers? Looks a lot more economical in the sense of less style flare and more efficient kickassery, and less bulky intimidation. Can at least do a shoulder roll or something but not sure how true to the material that would be.

Judges are supposed to be tough and uncompromising. They can and do die in the comics. They also use intimidation as well as firepower and gadgets to deal with whatever they face.

Regarding that second shot... from that part of the city it does not scream everything-is-going-to-shit like in the Sylvester Stallone version. Then again, long time since I saw the movie. I just remember everything outside seemed like the world was just waiting to die.

You forget the Stallone movie was divided into the Upper and Lower City. Can't have Dystopia without someplace nice to compare it to. After all if your future government has no nice clean areas to compare the shitholes to then it's just post apocalyptic.

The stills aren't inspiring me. That second photo in [Atlan[/b]'s post doesn't look particularly "Mega-City One" to me - just a rather anonymous SF urban skyline. I've always remembered the shapes of the buildings as being a bit more ... "out there", and I'd have liked to have seen that in the movie.

Having said that, these are only stills. Once there's some actual film footage for me to look at, these flaws may be overshadowed by the acting, characters and/or plot.

Whoever designed that iteration of the Lawgiver needs to be fired. An inch aft of the muzzle is an incredibly stupid place to have the mahazine and it if that isn't the magazine, what pray is it? Not to mention that whatever it is, it sucks visually.

It sure looks like a magazine. Its too wide and short to be a handgrip, too bulky to be an accessory.

IMDb says 21 September 2012 for the US and Canada.

It looks slightly better in the top poster; it seems like they've taken the Lawgiver Mark II and stretched it a bit.

The lawgiver looks a lot like someone was doing sketches while looking at a picture of an MP7 with the foregrip folded

I've never read any of the Dredd comics, but this looks interesting. I'm always down for a GRIMDARK future movie. Hav's got it right, as well. Those uniforms are sick looking.
