I hope the Bioshock movie comes out with the second one. It's slated for 2013, so maybe.

I...very much doubt that, since no movie studio wants to touch it so the project is basically abandoned.

The cinemetography is decent, but it does not provide any reason why a viewer should give two shits about the heroes in this.

They shouldn't be asking "Who is John Gault?" but "Why should an audience become emotionally invested in John Gault?"

And given the stance of the philosophy behind this movie, it's likely a question they would not even consider.

But AS is also preaching to a relatively small congregation. To any moviegoer coming off the street, if this film comes off as a preachy, incomprehensible mess, they're going to walk out wondering how to get their money back. And the producers are counting on this one being the first part of a trilogy, the second two parts will fail or perhaps not even be finished if part one tanks.

Tea Partiers will eat this shit up, conservative groups will buy the DVDs in bulk to hand out (like they do with books), and it will easily (and unfortunately) turn a profit since the budget was only $15 million.

I was expecting a lot more publicity given the movies themes and origins. As jollyeaper said this is practically in the same vein as that infamous Mel Gibson film. Yet it has not gained the limelight. I guess Ayn Rand is not so well known amongst the general population who don't read much anyway.

I do agree with the sentiment that this movie will likely find a dedicated, influential audience. Probably not in the theaters, I think it'll flop, but I think it'll be a tremendous cult fav, and I mean cult in the worst sense. Shrugged still moves a ton of copies each year and the damaging thing isn't the breath of the appeal but the positions of the people it appeals to. They're precisely the ones in a position to do so much damage to society.

The movie Wall Street was meant to be an indictment of the place but it's instead been hailed as a triumphant tale, recasting Gecko from villain to Greek hero. The man on the street might not be quoting the greed speech by heart but the brokers on Wall Street do. They're the ones in position to do the most damage.

Actually it used to be a decent appeal to the mysteries of nature. Why is the sky blue? Where does lightning come from? Fucking magnets, how do they work? You were left to invoke magic for most of human history. That human intellect could find answers to these questions changed everything. There was no longer a need to cower in superstitious dread of things we couldn't understand. Of course, people remain free to refuse understanding.

Except that the depth of the ocean varies, in the same fashion the height of the sky can be defined (Troposphere, ozone layer, whatever) but can also be looked at as being infinite if you just go up and up into space.

The height of the sky is also a fact depending on how you define the atmosphere (And a consistant one, as opposed to oceanic depths).

It's a pretty typical mythic standard. Some of the oldest human literature uses it (book of Job, for instance).
