Did I miss something? Is a retcon seriously being suggested because of some minor visual differences that are debatable at best (from a trailer) and the fact that Prometheus seems to have a few technological advances we didn't see one the Nostromo?

Yes. Apparently jollyreaper also can't comprehend how much technology has changed within the industry since the 70s. Shit, it's a retcon in the Star Wars prequels because the CGI has gotten so much better. NO CONTINUITY LUCAS!

There are some slight differences between those images sure, probably due to the 33 years between each production, but we'll just have to wait and see I suppose-
I'm not going to fault the art department for not recreating a prop that hasn't existed since the 70's other than on screen, buuuuut...

Care to explain how a decaying/decayed corpse is somehow sitting higher than it was X amount of years prior?
Or the fact that the jockey is almost the same size as his chair in Alien but is smaller in the past in Prometheus?
The jockey's arms are different.
The controls are in a different position.
The controls are different themselves.
The angle of the chair is different.
The chair design itself is different.

If they are trying to make it look the same for more than anything a fraction of a second, they fucked up horribly. If they are going to focus on it and say it's the same they fucked up horribly.
If they are counting on the majority of the people watching the movie not having any idea what the space jockey looked like in 1979 compared to 2012 and not being obsessive fat nerds like us, then score. :D

Hav, either they don't care and fundamentally changed why it looked like - which isn't impossible - or the circumstances of the mood will accept for the changes.

For instance, the face seems intact and the ribs arent collapsed, so maybe it's pre-implantation lol.

It's a presumably, military pilot sitting in a chair/cockpit. I guess if two pilots sitting in their chairs look incredibly similar to the point that you think they are the same anytime you see them, then sure.

Oh I doubt Scott cares, but no one is going to post those two screen caps and tell me they are the same person in their chair X amount of years later in a literal comparison.

Well one is the bizarre remains of some unknown thing with unknown machinery? nearby that provokes thought and mystery and otherness.

The other one is an alien and a control console.

So y'know.

Well, as it was said that the story started out as a prequel but expanded into its own universe, it seems possible that the scene shown above of what looks like the Space Jockey on the chair may have been intended to be exactly that in the Prometheus scene, but as the story diverted away from being a mere prequel the similarities were downplayed, or maybe the similarities were never perfected.

It seems pretty obvious to me that the films are largely unconnected but share visual familiarities in order to evoke a reaction in the audience (mostly speculation). I mean it might still be a prequel, but it seems to be dealing with way different themes and ideas than Alien. You know, stuff like 'what are we' and 'why do we exist' and 'where are we going', as opposed to 'what's out there in the dark' and 'what are we afraid of'.

Man I gotta say, any issues with differences in production design aside, I am just not at all impressed by the trailer. I'm not even geeked about it a little. Is anyone actually excited about seeing the movie?

It just has a flat and unnecessary Hollywood feel to it. And yes, this is the kind of movie my younger self would me doing Cartman antics over. I think my sense of wonder and anticipation has been cauterized.

The trailer doesn't do a very good job of making the movie look like it's about something. Frankly, Wrath of the Titans has a more interesting trailer.

Well it is reusing the fucking Inception/Dark Knight horns which I am already sick of and I already said.
Also, it is hard for something that is this visual to really invoke anything anymore as the effects quality on so many movies are similar these days. Alien/Geiger has also been so ripped off that it looks generic as fuck now, even in it's own universe.

The lack of character at all isn't helping.

I also don't think people really care. No one has been clamoring for anything Alien related like they have done with other franchises.

What it's hinting at in terms of plot isn't really exciting, and the CGI doesn't really stand out to me either. I mean, Alien vs Predator already did the whole "Chariot of the Gods" back-story with Predators, although it was brief.

I'm still going to see it, though.

Are the fans of Alien even the same fans of Alien Vs Predator?

I honestly don't know. I mean Alien terrified me and I think I have seen it twice. Aliens I think is great. (Bill Paxton and his collapse are one of my all time favorite characters and the one liners are top notch.) 3 & 4 are above average sci-fi that I found entertaining.

I never had any desire to see the Vs movies. Nor have I outside of snippets. The Predator is a plot device to make Arnold even more awesome and Glover be cool, nothing more. The aliens are obviously a weapon and I don't need more explanation more than that or anything trying to say otherwise.

Maybe I am the unusual one though.

Idunno. I like the Alien movies, and the Predator movies. I've read an Alien novel or two, and enjoyed them - especially the ones that split off from the movies and explore Alien infestations on populated worlds, or something like that that's not a rehash of one of the movies. I've never read the comics apart from I think an omnibus I borrowed out from the library a long time ago, but I enjoyed the 1999 AvP game, at least what I played of it... I just didn't feel like the two AvP movies were really of any great quality, but I think that competently handled there's some potential there...

Basically just a big question mark. I like the seed franchises and some of the AvP media, and I think there could be some depth to it if it was approached just right, but I don't know.

I for one cannot possibly resolve the fact that a cutting-edge research ship like the Prometheus appears more advanced than a cheap dirty space truck like the Nostromo. Hur hur hur.

Also I am totally stoked for this. As soon as I see someone even bring up AvP I know that they are bad and their opinion is bad.

Excited? Not really. More curious. I've hoped for another Ridley Scott science fiction film for awhile, and this is it. For that reason its, probably good that it won't be a straight up prequel to "Alien". I'm into the visuals, as they do IMHO harken back to "Alien". I do intend to see it, provided the opening reviews aren't horrible.
