Thanks for the perspective, Trainwreck.
It makes the outrage much clearer when realizing it's as absurdly offensive as if the robot was named Nigger Danger. I mean, that'd be an instant facepalm. Just because a slur isn't less well known (and the targeted group is less numerous) doesn't make it any less severe, though as has been pointed out, the individual responsible has acknowledged his mistake and apologized.
Also, Atom, oddly enough, I hadn't actually thought to look up the word "gypsy", I was surprised that it's a term that's used for that many disparate ethnic groups.
As an aside, since the giant robot in question was destroyed in the movie, that makes it easy enough to avoid having to re-use the name in any upcoming sequels.

Anyway, speaking of names, how awesome is it that Toho's "Gojira" was somehow translated (transliterated? phoneticized?) into English as "Godzilla", which doesn't mean anything but is a freaking awesome name? :D

I actually rather liked the say the names of the jagers worked. Discounting the offensiveness of the term gypsy (I'll admit until this thread I had no idea it was really offensive at all) most of them sounded like they had been given two letter designations that were expanded into names by their construction/operations crews.
Striker Eureka is actually really clever because it's a gold rush reference, which was pretty much the biggest thing to affect Australia ever, probably including both world wars. The only one that sounded like an actual name was crimson typhoon, which was a late construction that could have been named before it was built anyway.

If they do a prequel I'll riot if I don't get to see tacit ronin on screen, because that is the most amazing name ever for anything. Im naming my first child that.

Dr. Trainwreck wrote:Romani have an actual presence and history in Europe, were targets for the Holocaust, and still face massive discrimination in Eastern Europe. I've literally seen people holding protests because a Roma camp would be built outside their city and describing them as an infestation. The word gupsy is also used as a slur against anybody, Roma or not. Given the attitude towards Roma, I think you could compare it to 'nigger': everyone in the US once used Tarantino's favorite word without thinking how it could be racist.

So, Travis Beacham was more than a little insensate with the whole issue. Then again he's not European and he apparently apologized, so it evens out.
Travis was unaware it was a racist term and to be frank who can blame him, it isn't seen as that highly offensive as 'negro' or 'faggot' by word alone and education plays a part of that because of the emphasis that the N word was the main racial thing to be aware of. Some countries don't regard 'negro' as racist such as Uruguay, just as Gypsy isn't offensive in every region of the world, it's not seen as racist in the UK by itself, and having programmes like 'my big fat gypsy wedding' make it the norm term, but saying pikey is very offensive, particular to irish travellers.

But you know what's offensive, automatically judging and labelling someone that their not like this quote
It would have come close to redeeming the fucking Nazi who thought 'Gupsy Danger' was a good name for the robot.
Pacfic rim isn't 'drag me to hell' that literally has a gypsy stereotype come in and curse etc. The name came from another source altogether and was used to name a giant robot. And yet this warrants Travis bring branded a Nazi how? You should bother doing research as to why the robot was named 'gypsy danger' and not assume because the scriptwriter was a racist.

On subject of the film, it looks very promising and should had been the version the 98 tried to go for, I have seen Gareth Edwards 'Monsters' and recommend it to anyone to rent, but as long as it has no first camera-shaking Cloverfield, it had excellent marketing but not really that good a film.

Look, Korgi, I didn't know about his apology when I wrote that comment. When I found out, I took note of it. How about reading what you quote?

From the brief look in the trailer, can anyone tell how large this new Godzilla is going to be?

I'm not a huge classic Godzilla buff, so I'm basing this on the values in the wiki that say Showa-era Godzilla is ~100m tall, while Heisei-era Godzilla goes up to 212m (!!!) in height.

Not meaning to steer it back into PacRim territory, but that's over twice as tall as the Kaiju and Jaegers in PacRim.. I'm just saying that if the effects are pulled off well and the camera directing and viewing angles are done nicely, the sheer size of a 200m+ monster could be downright orgasmifying on the big screen!

Image taken at around 1:10 of the trailer.

Lower left: white-ishly highlighted is a building which I assume to be 426 Kearny Street, San Francisco CA.

Further assuming that the jumper flare (red circle) and Big-G's spikes are about level with the building top...

Looking at Google Earth that building at 426 Kearny is about the same height as the "Transamerica Pyramid" building at 260 m.

So... assuming again that my observations are correct: This Godzilla is somewhere in the 250+ meter range.

Rewatched the Trailer again: Big-G walks quite closely to the building which makes it look like he's around 260-280 in height to me.

:banghead: I'm stupid or blind... it's even the second in the list.

That building is the "555 California Street", formerly the bank of America Center, at 237 meters height.

So the Big Lizard is somewhere in that height range.

Also, he seems to be heading towards Chinatown...

...so were talking a category 6 then? :o

(not that I know the science of the category stuff but Godzilla would be near 200ft more in height then that category 5 monster, that thing according to the wiki was 596ft in height.)

Of course Godzilla could be even taller as it wasn't standing fully upright in that clip, this should hopefully be the movie of the summer, hopefully the story shows the devastating social impact of daily people as this thing goes on a rampage, whilst also sharing the same time to the military to how they handle this thing. (The cloverfield monster is just chewing gum on the floor compared to this zilla!)

The last thing I want is a subplot of the hero being as a 'get togther' for a heroic divorced father and his ex who are united by this tragedy (because zilla squashed the beta male ex's boyfriend' Is it too much to ask for a disaster/monster movie not to feature a soapbox subplot?

Tezunegari, awesome job, good eye.

Over 250m crouched.. if they pull off the visuals, were going to see some jaw-dropping shots!

I'm sure the visuals will be a treat...but I gotta admit I kinda miss the good ol' days when it was a guy in a rubber suit stomping on things.

What we've seen so far seems to be a call back to the Classic Monster Suit, so I'm hopeful. They should be releasing another teaser trailer soon, yes?

Anyone recall Mark Jacobson's Gojiro? The central conceit there is that Godzilla is real enough, a heavily mutated many times normal size lizard- sentient, grumpy, cynical, but not particularly murderous except sometimes first thing in the morning.

Unfortunately, being a giant freak of neutron- bombarded nature, his career options are distinctly limited...to, in fact, appearing as a monster in the movies. Effectively the creature is playing the man in the rubber suit, and it only gets odder from there.

It is very meta, and while there are tragic moments- off set he runs his island home as a refuge for radiation damaged children, with the heartache that implies- watching the giant atomic fireball breathing lizard trying to come to terms with celebrity and set the world to rights is also very funny. I'd like to see that filmed, one of these days.

In the meantime, at least we have big and stompy. Although I may provide my own voiceover.

Assuming the human subplots are mandatory, then at the very least I hope they're given minimal amounts of screentime.

I'll probably get lambasted for saying this, but if most people leave the theater at the end of the film without knowing the names, or recognizing the faces, of the human characters in the film, that'll be a good thing hahahaha

I'd be pleased if they made the movie pretty much center around the entire response to Godzilla. It's the reverse-bechdel test for monsters. The movie needs to be about Godzilla. When Godzilla's not on the screen, people need to be talking about Godzilla. If there's no Godzilla on screen and people are talking about something other than Godzilla, it fails. Acceptable scenes are a) generals in war rooms talking about what to do about Godzilla b) soldiers preparing to fight Godzilla c) parents comforting children who are freaking out about Godzilla d) people crawling through the rubble left after Godzilla curbstomps a city e) Godzilla. I'm willing to tolerate a scene with the scientist talking to his girlfriend about the state of their relationship only if he immediately shuts her down and says "Baby, I don't got time for this shit right now. It's Godzilla out there!"

If you have a scene of two women talking about Godzilla, you pass the Bechdel test!

No, Godzilla is generally referred to as male. They'd need to talk about Mothra instead. /taking the piss

Personally, I like the idea of casting a few major characters without calling for a specific race or gender. Ripley from the Alien series was originally intended to be a man, but Sigourney Weaver got an audition and knocked it out of the park. And Idris Elba as Heimdall. Both definitely earned the parts.

I'm currently wondering how many people are seriously saying that Godzilla looks like a rip-off of Pacific Rim. He's so iconic they've gotta be few in number, but I'm not going to underestimate the stupidity of kids these days.
