Adding three industry Titans to Team Cryo!
I've submitted my next video and I've asked Sandi for permission to share it with three of my friends, prior to the airing of the next episode, so that I can begin working on their advice asap.
Steven Browning
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3449797/?ref_=fn_al_nm_2
I, Robot
Alice in Wonderland
Oz the Great and Powerful
Edge of Tomorrow
Steven was my best friend when we were 13. He was my first CGI instructor, and together we made dozens of Star Wars fan films before he moved to California and made it big.
Scott Herbertson
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0378643/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Space: Above and Beyond
Star Trek: Nemesis
War of the Worlds
Star Trek (2009)
Avatar
Thor
Battleship
Man of Steel
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Transcendence
Scott has known me literally my entire life. He's one of my Father's oldest friends, and his help was invaluable during the Next Enterprise Contest. As an experienced starship set designer, I could really use his help with my interiors.
Andrew Probert
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0698216/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
Battlestar Galactica (1978)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Airwolf
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Back to the Future
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Andrew and I have never met in person, but he was kind enough to offer his help with the Enterprise contest, and we've been corresponding ever since. You know him as the creator of the Enterprise D and the original Cylons. He's a personal hero, and I'm dying to know what he thinks of my concept work for TNGS.
Naturally once the episode airs I'll get their input regardless, but if Sandi says it's okay I'll start getting their help tomorrow. (I'll still be doing all the work myself.)

It's also worth noting that I'm very, very concerned about my prospects of remaining in the contest after the last episode, and I'm somewhat unhappy with the progress I've made since, so these guys may be my final lifeline.

I don't, but I wonder if he has any of our old films. I'll have to ask. Lots of stop motion. Also micro machines attached to paperclips suspended below the lens.StarSword wrote:I hope you still have pictures; this I gotta see.Fuzzy_Modem wrote:...I've been remembering this time when Steven and I needed an explosion to blow up a starship, so we tacked a blue sheet to the ceiling, and Steven had me lay on the floor with the camera while he sprayed flaming hairspray at my face... ah the good old days...

Andrew Probert REALLY doesn't like the asymmetry, and he also has issues with stuck on looking bits. I need to further smooth and integrate components.

May have just disqualified myself.
I just re-read an email that says I was supposed to send the video to them directly, in addition to youtube if I wanted to. Up till now we have only needed to do youtube.
I had just put my video on youtube when I got the reminder email, and thus did not read it as carefully as I should have, and the deadline has passed by a few hours. I'm uploading it through the proper channels now... Hopefully they'll be lenient, but I remember what they said about 3Dingo and 1 minute before the deadline.
[edit] Sigh. 4%. Fucking Alaskan internet. This is why I turned it in a day in advance...

So, another episode by...and you've got some SERIOUS competition going on. I hope you've got some good revision under your belt there, man, because you're going to need it.

Yeah, I have basically no confidence at the moment. I won't until the judges come back with a choice between the three options I presented.

Re: I'm a contestant on "The Next Great Starship"! -Star Cit
Those all look much better than last week's concepts. Given that it's supposed to be able to deliver troops planetside, something at least symmetrical is a lot easier to swallow as capable of a fast reentry under fire. Have you considered flipping the angle on those side-shields on the third concept? Maybe even hug them in close for reentry, then extend them away from the hull to clear the manned turrets once reentry is no longer an issue. I wish one of yesterday's teams hadn't hogged the whole heat-shield concept; it's a good one, even if their implementation was silly.
As for turret field of fire, I like having heavy downward-angled turret firepower on this spec. It implies the ability to deliver hot flaming fuckoff to anyone attempting to contest the LZ. Most everyone's going for a balanced field of fire, which makes a lot of sense for a pure spacecraft, but a lot less for a ground assault gunship.

I've asked the judges about the possibility of mirrored/swappable shield and sword, so players could choose symmetry or not, and in various combinations, as well as making their ship right handed or left handed.
Leaning heavily toward the RSI concept now, but smaller and without any interior, and perhaps incorporating the strongest aspect of the other two designs.

Chris Roberts agrees with the majority of the community. RSI it is! I'll be adding some of the Kruger flavor though, mostly the dorsal/ventral armor tilt, as opposed to the RSI's Y axis rotation.
I've also asked C.R. about modular options for symmetry/asymmetry (sword/shield or shield/sword or double sword or double shield.) I really hope I can do that.

I think that sounds cool, and a bit like what I'm working towards, but I'm admittedly having trouble visualizing it fully. I wish we could actually collaborate.

Re: I'm a contestant on "The Next Great Starship"! -Star Cit
I voted RSI as I liked that design best, and its turrets have excellent coverage. I know you are removing them, but I never had a problem with the missiles on the end. People complained they looked fragile, but all these ships have shields. If someone tries to shoot off the missile pod, a fair number of their shots are going to miss entirely or hit a location that affects few other systems. Plus if the ammo cooks off, it is as far away as possible. Hmmm, if the pod was gimbaled, could you arc missiles over the shield to fire on hostiles hitting your protected side? That would let all firepower except the pilot's turret to be brought to be directed against virtually any vector. Ooo, it would be cool if the gunners could request such a missile pod be slaved to their turret, giving them an "alt-fire" and relieving the pilot of an additional task as necessary.
Outland is too outlandish for my tastes, and I cannot unsee giant space tank/APC in the Kruger design. The turrets also look like they belong on a flying saucer to me.

Just added a flourish that I think will keep me competitive. 1st draft modeling and texturing will be finished within the next week.
I can't show you, but I'll try to describe. Start with the RSI design, take the sword and shield off, and add the Kruger's symmetrical downward slanting "wings" then mount the sword and shield on those, hinged at the bottom Imperial shuttle style, but folding down not quite horizontal, for the gull-wing vibe. Still working on turret design and precise weapon placement, but the resulting firing arcs should be far superior to anything else in the game.
She's much smaller on the interior now, but fits out the hanger doors. Just the cargo hold (with marine seating) and cockpit remain. The turrets will need to be entered from the flight deck, as the hinges would make the interior a massive headache otherwise.
The new flourish is too difficult to describe, other than to say it gives her a unique and menacing posture when in strafing configuration.
I think it's safe to say now that the winner of the contest will be one of the MI-24 helicopter inspired designs, as that's what the judges seem to want. 4 Horsemen's is my favorite.
So at this point, I'm hoping they'll want to more unique design for second place, as two nearly identical competitors wouldn't be as much fun imo.

Added an airlock system that isolates the pilot from the cargo hold, allowing for the rescue of drifting survivors.
Here is a thought... what if the turrets were detachable? Like little life pods with a bit of maneuvering capability. Not a fighter that you would deploy to dog-fight, but just enough propulsion to get out of harms way if the rest of the ship is about to explode.
I'll sleep on it. The turrets are the last thing I need to design.
