Re: Mithril
I think Mithril is a magic metal... at least it has magic properties in most fantasy settings.Tsyroc wrote:On watching The Fellowship of the Ring extended edition the first time I was thinking that there seem to be some parallels between Mithril and titanium. The color and that it's hard and light, and the Dwarves were mining veins of it from the Earth. Besides, if anyone ever made a mail shirt out of titanium like the one Frodo has it would be worth a bundle just because of how fine the links were.
Okay, this was all before the thread on sci-fi metals explained a bit more about titanium and other metals.
While I still think Mithril draws some ideas from titanium I think it fits better beside Uru and Adamantine, indestructable "magic" metals from human myths.
Alex Moon wrote: It doesn't have to be long, but at least incorporating it some way could be possible. Especially since they're going to most likely end the movies with the scene from the Grey Havens. Have the hobbits pass through Hobbiton on their way there, and see what's going on. They march to Bag End, encounter Saruman and tell him to get the hell out. He tries to kill Frodo and is in turn killed by Wormtonge, and then the Hobbits leave.
From what Peter Jackson said on one of the DVD commentaries it doesn't sound like there will be a scouring of the Shire. That was partially why he made a point of showing the positibility in the vision Frodo got from Galadriel's mirror.
It's too bad. I always liked that part of the book, but by cutting that out PJ doesn't have to spend time setting up a lot of the stuff with Merry and Pippin (did they happen to drink anything while hanging out with Treebeard? )

They would never spend so much to film such and then cut it out completel, such scenes would cost several million. It will be hit or miss, and it's almost certainly miss. At the most we will see Bilbo and Frodo passing leaving Middle Earth.DPDarkPrimus wrote:I hope he had at least filmed the scenes, so we can get it on the Return of the King extended DVD version in 2005 or whenever.

SPOILER ALERT
There was only one part I didn't like: Faramir taking Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath. I can accept most of the other changes in the films, either as necessities to allow them to actually show it in theaters (despite the fan following, it's hard to see a 3-hour film in the theater any more), or as applications of a more realistic standard (Tolkien's portrayal of Aragorn and Arwen as being dedicated lovers is fine, but let's face it, there's a lot of people with ignorant prejudices out there who balk at the idea of 2 humans with different skin color or eye shapes getting married; imagine what they'd do if they found out some human guy [questionable to them anyway, given the Numenorean half-elven heritage they share with Elrond and their apparant semi-magical abilities] wanted to marry an immortal elven chick [who's already about 3000 years old before she even meets Aragorn, a "girl" who was born over a thousand years before either of the Numenorean kingdoms fell from grace]).
But to make such a drastic change in Frodo and Sam's travel path (especially considering that the trip in the book would have taken a couple of weeks), combined with making Faramir into a cheap copy of his brother (and thus removing the greater nobility he showed in the novels), really made me mad.
OTOH... there are worse things that could have happened. Overall, I thought it was great.

I missed most of the second half of the movie, mostly cuz I was screaming *spoiler* bout the elves at helm's deep.Alex Moon wrote:I was just wondering because it seems like I am the only one who didn't like the movie at all. *sniff* I would be nice to have some company...Howedar wrote:I think it is a question of Jackson's sometimes loose interpretations of Tolkein's work, rather than the movie as a whole being good.

I think that TTT and FoTR are on equal footing, but I think the Extended Edition of Fellowship is probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. I would've had no problem sitting in the theatre for another half-hour. It was just spectacular.

Just imagine Two Towers Extended Edition!
Which reminds me, why exactly is LOTR-EE not PG? I didn't see anything in the EE thar warranted the higher rating- which is what I was hoping for. Mayhap I didn't notice?

The moive was PG-13 and the EE R, proubabbly because of the bursts of blood splurting from the decapitated Orcs and other assorted violence, which actually had blood. Blood seems to be the main basis of ratings for violence.Vympel wrote:Just imagine Two Towers Extended Edition!

The Extended Edition is PG-13, or so says my box. I thought it was going to be R, as well ...Sea Skimmer wrote:The moive was PG-13 and the EE R, proubabbly because of the bursts of blood splurting from the decapitated Orcs and other assorted violence, which actually had blood. Mine also says PG-13, but then the interviews and such that come with it have mentions of it in fact being R several times.Durandal wrote:The Extended Edition is PG-13, or so says my box.
