Aren't they going to make a reboot Stargate movie already anyway?

And when has the SG universe US government killed anybody for finding out about the Stargate program? Rogue organizations outside the government have, yes.
It was heavily implied that they arranged the death of the reporter in Season 2's Secrets.

There have been rumours off and on for ages that Emmerich wanted to return to do more films; based solely on the original not the TV franchise. I don't know if they've come to anything recently.

Didn't they eventually blame the NID for that?

What Bats said, pretty sure the NID were the ones pulling dirty tricks to keep the whole thing under wraps for their own nefarious purposes.
Not in the mood to rewatch the entire dvd boxset to find the definitive answer right now, besides I'm in the middle of a Farscape marathon.
So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.

The NID aren't Torchwood. NID is definitely part of the government system, even if rogue elements operating under its auspices; just like if there is a rogue CIA agent the government can't disclaim responsibility for his/her actions; so the government is responsible for anything the NID does, as doing it in their name. If they don't want to be associated with the NID then they should declare it a criminal/terrorist group, arrest its rogue members and hunt down any of its rogue operatives that are on the loose. This is what happens in some fanfic, and partly in canon with the good guy NID agents like Barrett and the rogue ones like Makepeace.

Knife wrote:Been thinking about this on and off all day. I agree you'd have to 'reboot' the movie as well, call it the pilot of the show.

With a decade of US intervention in the middle east now, it would be an idea to tweak the concept a bit and have the US discover the Star Gate in Iraq during the early Iraqi war. Say, special ops went in to secure the Iraq National Museum after it got looted really bad and discovered the Gate in a secured warehouse in the basement of the museum. It attracts the attention of some people and gets transported back to the US for study. If you want to stick it back under NORAD, fine, but would probably keep the JSOC nature current spec ops or even better put in under Homeland Security. A pithy line somewhere in the dialog about where all that money really went to.
Although I kind of liked the "we've had this thing since the '30s and only now know what to do with it" vibe. A more recent origin has some problems, among others that it diminishes Jackson's groundbreaking accomplishment in making gate travel possible by doing the translations right. Then again, you could tell stories in that case about how the Iraqis (or whoever) had actually been using the gate in the past and the Stargate project in the US would know nothing whatsoever about it.

With all the discussion of reboots and so on, I think it might be appropriate to put this here:
Deadline Hollywood wrote:Big day for reboots. First it was Cliffhanger, and now MGM and Warner Bros. announced they are teaming with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to create a re-imagined trilogy based on the sci-fi hit Stargate, one of the biggest titles in the MGM library. Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original film with Devlin, is on board to direct this one, with Devlin producing. Those two are already hard at work on a new version of Independence Day at Fox.

MGM’s Gary Barber called Emmerich and Devlin “world-class creators of the original Stargate,” and said they will “bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations.”

Said Emmerich and Devlin: “The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.” MGM’s Jonathan Glickman will oversee it with Warner Bros’ Greg Silverman. Warners will distribute with MGM handling some international territories. Back in its day, Stargate set the record for highest October gross and did near $200 million in global ticket sales. It went on to have a very successful run as a syndicated TV series.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Ugh. I've heard Emmerich hated the series, which will most likely make this a full-on remake/reboot of the original film and discard all continuity from the series.
Yeah, I've always taken the subtext of the Birther movement to be, "The rules don't count here! This is different! HE'S BLACK! BLACK, I SAY! ARE YOU ALL BLIND!?
