You mean the C&C95 guy we see the tiny little submachine guns that has no recoil on full auto but knocks the person it hits over?
Now if you mean the guys in Tiberian Sun, there just people carrying a freakish cross between the FN2000 and the M16 with digital solider gear. Thus the full-face helmets, with TS came out that was the plan for digital solider. Now they're using a pair of small sunglass like screens. Of course it's fairly stupid because they not in NBC gear despite there being huge amounts of toxic plant life that's around.
The Grenadier however is just stupid. Why the fuck would you give someone a powered arm to better throw grenades when you can just give them a damn launcher!?

Makes far more sense to issue a M16/M203 combo. The M79 has been obsolete for a long time.Crayz9000 wrote:Hell, just give them an M79!Sea Skimmer wrote:The Grenadier however is just stupid. I was playing Heart of Evil all yesterday evening. Imagine the Vietnam War, but with a growing number of zombies attacking both sides... now imagine that you're smack in the middle of it as an Army captain.

Actually I've heard that the M79 is more accurate than the M203- go figure.Sea Skimmer wrote:

In theory it is, because it has a big flip up sight on the top with corrections for windage and range. In practice grenadiers found they almost never had a use for this, because most usage was barely outside the minimal range of the grenade. They tended to become quite skilled at eyeballing it.Vympel wrote:Actually I've heard that the M79 is more accurate than the M203- go figure.Sea Skimmer wrote:

Same thing happened with light mortars in WW2, both the British 2 inch and German 50mm originally came with very complex and accurate sights. They never got used and where soon removed from production.
Similar things also happened to the gun control of the 6-pounder anti tank, as designed it has an elaborate screw system for training. This got removed very quickly. Pushing and pulling was more effective.
Far better though just to get a handy LCM monitor that has three Mk.19's and a pair of flame throwers. Its like shooting a target with a burning exploding firehose.

It IS possible. We could do one RIGHT NOW. Alto it may be different from what everybody thinks about, we could come to something similar to a Glitterboy of USA-GPA-01 Power Armor.
But if we REALLY get serious, with the labs and scientists and neural tech, along with mechanical experts; we could come to something VERY SIMILAR to a Marine PA like in WH40k. Mark 2 maybe.

On a totally unrelated note your X-COM body armor avatar is defintely one of the wierdest body armor designs ever.Necro99 wrote:It IS possible. We could do one RIGHT NOW. Maybe, but my favorite EVER is the Power Armor we see in the Empire Earth Intro. Multiple sensors on hemlets and large shoulder plates are ownage.

The correct term is pauldron (in place of shoulder plates)
Never played Empire Earth ..

Well, I think there are three science fiction option for "soldiers":
1: genetically engineered figthing beings,
2: robots,
3: special gears for the human infantry.
1: Imagine some kind of the aliens!
Far above human mobility, minimal need of supply (they eat whatever they find or each other when neccesery), the psichological fear they can cause.
We are far away from creating these figthers. At least I hope.
2: Imagine a powersuited squad figthing against the cloud of fast, colibri sized flying or jumping robots!
Small size=better hiding and providing smaller, faster targets. Small size also means that they can not carry heavy weapons, however this can be compensated by tactical coordination and numbers. (Any tank can have huge gun, but what about if the enemy is inside the gun and able to explode?) They are fearless and emotionless. They can be transported and stationed in deactivated state, when they use no supplies at all, and when destroyed, parts of them can be reused.
However they are more vulnerable to EMP or HERF attacks and maybe they can be reprogramed to use against their owner. And they are expensive as well.
3: Well, this suit needs to be completely closed and able to operate in any conditions (on alien worlds too). I think hard plates will be used only on the head (helmet) on the trunk and on the forearms. (Sometimes I play with the idea of a plate shield.) Other things about it has been already written.
So, I think the regular infantry will be gone this century. Do not forget the political consequences of the heavy infantrymen losses! Long space transportations are another problem. If we can not "turn the soldiers off" they require recreational facilities and huge amount of supplies during the voyage.

I prefer options 1 and 3. Imagine genetically engineered soldiers that has been trained and cross-trained for their whole lives in airtight, armored suits! Think Master Chief from Halo
