Transformers Reactions Thread - No spoilers until July 4th

Post by tim31 »

...Because it's only fair to the North Americans.

I friggin' loved it. All my friends that came and saw it with me agreed that it was the best action film they'd seen this year. I felt that Bay didn't go over the top with the usual wish-wash, although for some people I guess any at all will be too much.

In summation: after waiting twenty years, I was not disappointed; not the cheesy-one liners, nor the necessary contrivances, could stop me from thoroughly enjoying this movie. I can't wait to see what everyone else thinks, because opinions are going remain as divided as they have been in the lead-up to this release.

I read from a few comments that the action can get quite fast and it is hard to distinguish who is fighting who (cause they all look the same - grey, bunch of metal... especially the decepticons). I've personally mistook Scorpornok and Bonecrusher for Megatron in the trailer! So ya think for a so-so Transformer fan it's going to be a challenge?

Sheesh I just wished they came up with better designs. Even Starscream doesn't even look like he was jet when he's transformed.

I was really disappointed.

It reminded me of Pearl Harbour, but with giant robots.

Hrm. I wonder, what's taking so long for that Fantastic Four 2 review thread to pop up?

I'm easy to please, so I frakking loved it.

Some hardcore fan references such as actual lines from Transformers the Movie as said by Optimus Prime, and wee reference to the "speciesist" slur the Decepticons actually called humans in the comics. No Sherman Dam, but close enough.

Shia LeBeouf carried the film well I thought. Certainly I would have liked more scenes with the robots, but I thought the scenes with them were more than I thought we'd have.

But yeah, Bay's frenetic style did muddle up who was who in the final battle.

Overall I thought I got what I paid for. Transforming robots, explosions, and other thingamajigs that will probably be in much heated discussions next week when it hits Stateside.

Until then, chaps.

Just caught it... Passable. It's Transformers so don't expect B5-standard in terms of plot, but the action and CGI is pretty good. Although, there are a few common-sense questions... but later as that would involve spoilers.

Anyone felt that they overdid the CGI for the transforming animation. Honestly, I think it looks bad. Why? Cause there's simply freaking too many parts to keep track of... you can't even see how they transform (i.e. which part goes where, which part is the arm, etc...) All I see is a bunch of metal... transmorphing...

I didn't find the final battle too confusing. Nor did I think it was too long. As for 'too much detail in the tranformation'... What?? You people are too hard to please!

My bad, I thought it was a July 4 release. Mod edit please!

It started out well I thought, and had it's amusing parts but the absolutely retarded tactics of the Decepticons shit me to tears. I felt quite honestly at times like I was watching a friend play WoW as the main tank.

There were also two decent 'fuck you' to the fans I didn't appreciate.

Because Dreamworks wanted the US release of the film more properly timed for the Fourth of July.

That film was fucking awesome.

My friends will attest that I got, well, quite excited in parts.

I will concede this to the fanboys - Hugo Weaving wasn't the greatest choice for Megatron's voice actor.

I also didn't think much of one particular scene, but hey - it was a FUCKING AWESOME MOVIE.

In theory that should have caused Australians to have to wait as well. Worldwide release dates etc.

That's very true. Not because he was a bad voice actor, but because of the flanging and modulation he really doesn't sound much like Hugo Weaving. Any other capable (and cheaper) voice actor could probably have done Megatron as he did with that voice distortion (and the slight bass reverb), but if Frank Welker had done it, he would at least have been a familiar voice to the fans.

While it certainly isn't guaranteeing how the final trend will play out, Rotten Tomatoes is currently listing six critical reviews, all of them positive.

The general consensus seems to be: "So awesome."

AHA! I'll take that concession. :P

Personally I'd rather them not have used the original Prime voice now I've seen it. It forces the comparison, so to speak, between the new and the original and makes enjoying the original on it's own merits harder, or at least it did for me.

The mass action in the climatic battle does make it rather hard to differentiate the different Transformers. The shaky close-ups and fast cuts didn't help there, either.

IMO Prime and Megatron could've had more dramatic, poetic dialogue..
Not that the original toons were Shakespeare, but still..

"Megatron didn't sound like Agent Smith!"

Well GOOD.

I was so annoyed that he sounded exactly the same in LOTR. He is a great actor with a large range, so it's good that they didn't have him do the same damn voice again.

Overall I enjoyed the movie.

The bad:
+1 on the "hard to differentiate".
A specific character. Reading wikipedia about the reason behind using him still didn't help.
A specific location: I was like "WTF?"
Some parts seemed too rushed.
Transformers too complex parts. Every time they transformed it seemed like a bunch of mumbo-jumbo shifting all over the place.

The good:
Lots of action.
Some funny scenes.
Military hardware and some scenes involving them.
Final battle.
After leaving the theatre I had a skeptic look on the vehicles on the road, that probably means something :P

I only want to know one thing:

At any point in the movie, even perhaps just in the background, coming out of the window of a passing car, ANYWHERE, can you hear "The Touch" By Stan Bush? If the answer is no, then I'm waiting for it to come out on HBO.

This can be SLIGHTLY mitigated if someone tells me that the universal greeting is used at some point.

So, any hints of Unicron showing up in a sequel? Simple yes/no, please, no elaboration, and in tinytext.
