Basing arguments off computer game mechanics = bad idea!

Post by 2000AD »

I got thinking about this after the IG88 vs Master Chief thread, where someone tried to use the game mechanics of Halo to gauge MC's abilitys.

Here are some things that show just how stupid basing arguments off game mechanics is:

Humans can survive falling off the top of a skyscraper with no physical impedemant. (GTA:3 + GTA:VC)

Humans can heal gunshot wounds by leaning against a wall (The Getaway)

By taking some painkillers you can completely ignore the effects of physical injury (Max Payne)

One X-Wing can destroy a Star Destroyer. ( X-Wing vs Tie Fighter)

Said Star Destroyer only has (approx) 12 laser turrets and one missle launcher (XW vs TF)

This is just scratching the surface. If you have any other ideas post them.

It depends on if the game is meant to be just a game or meant to be a simulation. Using game mechanics of say Warcraft III is just fucking stupid; I didn't know they had square force field generators a thousand years ago. But using the mechanics of a simulators like Harpoon is all right.

Quite a few mecha games and like claim to be Simulators, and basically are of their own fucked up realities.

In Starcraft, marines are close in comparison to the size of a battlecruiser :D

Starcraft: One Marine can kill a Battlecruiser

ST:Armada: The best ship of each respective fleet only has one phaser bank and photon torpedo launcher.

SW: Alliance: You alone can kill an SSD.

GTA: A point blank gunshot doesn't kill...falling into water kills instantly....and hookers give back life and energy.

Like Skimmer said some games that take painstaking detail is good, but a great deal of the times it really shouldn't be used.

That depends upon you :) .

But in GTA3, they do take money away at a pretty high pace.

According to Medieval: Total War, becoming a general of an army makes you nearly invincible in melee. If you're a prince or king, you are even more invincible than before.

Well, since Halo was a game first, those things should be taken into consideration first. Now, game balancing things like the indestructible Human vehicles, and MCs ablitity to "kick" over Jeeps and Tanks should not be counted towards his ablities.
Though we are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,--

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Note he said Game MECHANICS...not saying the game itself is invalid, just the MECHANICS which are invariably in favor of the human.

Enemy soldiers have genetically enhanced sense, but said soldiers cannot see to the end of a well lit corridor. (Metal Gear Solid)

Eating dog food can heal a human of gunshot wounds (Wolfenstein 3D)

Gunshot wounds will effect the physical health of the person, but will not impare them physically. (most first person shooters)

An AK-74 can penetrate an M1A1 at long range and kill the gunner inside.
Communists with afore-mentioned AK-74s can see and shoot accurately at a single camoflauged soldier behind total cover during a foggy, windy night while raining at a distance of several kilometers.

MSG: let's not forget:

1. Dominant genes= better and stronger, Recessive= Pussy
2. a man who can deflect bullets with his sword can still be taken down hand to hand.
3. You can take Stinger Missles to the chest...and live.
4. and just like Castle Wolfstien a can of rations can heal any wound regardless of degree of injury.

There are others but it's been a while.

Flashpoint is great, rifle bullets make tanks and APC's jump up in the air when hit, while a AT-4 into the grill doors of T-80 won't even slow it.

Dispite advanced thermal and optical sites and open terrian, tank combat occurs at ranges under 500 meters, however dispite both sides tank weapons being able to go through any armor at such ranges, tanks still need 2-4 hits to kill.

That's what Sultan Osmond I thought too. 120 Varangian Guardsmen disabused him of the notion.

While I still use RPG mechanics for most of my AD&D calc's and debates(Don't like it? Whine to someone who cares what you think.), we all know not to bring up the truly silly things.

A headshot from an antimatter rifle is survivable by a character of 10th level(LOL!!!!).

If it's got a tailwheel, you actually do have to push the nose down. It's one of those weird flight things, where you have to get the wing to be less angled to the ground to fly...rather than have the wing like \ , you need it like -- .
