Dr. Who is insidious..."Blink" spoilers

Post by Chardok »

Okay, so, props to you english chaps for exporting Dr. Who. I've never seen it before, and never cared to, but I saw last week's episode...well, part of it, anyway, with the weird alien family and the Dr. Improsoning his alien side in a watch and thought "Well, that was...decent...I may just give this a shot..."

This week, The episode "Blink" played..now I'm positively hooked. I mean, it literally scared me so bad I had a hard time falling asleep. my GF was wracked by nightmares like we were two little kids (We're in our late 20's!!!)

If you've not seen it - Do. The basic premise is this: Statues come to life when you're not looking and kill you by transporting you back in time and you live the rest of your life there. You basically live to death. then they feed on the energy of all the day's you WOULD have had in the present until you died. I mean, that is some serious Stephen king stuff, but it doesn't lose any of it's sci-fi ness. Also...I had no idea the Dr. Was so eloquent! "Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff" BRILLIANT explanation of space time! It's all so clear to me now!

Anyway, cheers and bring on the Tea-and-crumpets, I'm converted!

The rest of you should, too.

You had the fortune to see two of the better ones. There's some threads here that five people's reactions to them numerically, if you're interested in avoiding the not-terribly-good ones. Though I've enjoyed almost every episode since the revival.

"Blink" was by Steven Moffatt who is, quite probably, the best writer for the new DW. He also did "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" two-parter, considered some of the best material of the first season.

Also, Sally Sparrow = very fuckable.

Blink was damn good, arguably the best one off episode of the season.

That was The Empty Child, not Unearthly. :P

That's what I said, didn't I? :P

I'm trying to recall where I got "unearthly" now.

I don't remember where I left my link, but there's probably some places online where you can go back and watch the entire lot (or at least the good ones).

I recommend "Dalek", "School Reunion", "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Utopia" most highly.

They were two of my favorite eps as well. Especially chilling was the 'son' and his voiceover as the Doctor visited unimaginable and everlasting torment on the family.

Probably was. Funny how that got in my head. Last episode I watched lately was the ending to "Utopia" again on BBC3 just before.

The ending to "The Family of Blood" is great though. That's what I call divine retribution.

Good on you, Chardok. Blink is probably one of my favourite episodes, just because it is one of the scariest pre-watershed things I've ever seen.

The science might work on (techno-)babble, the plot may have holes in it and the sets may be Welsh, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the recent series, with only a one or two exceptions. (I'm looking at you, Jast, Caan and Thay) And even those had good bits.
According to wikipedia, "the Mohorovičić discontinuity is the boundary between the Earth's crust and the mantle."
According to Starbound, it's a problem solvable with enough combat drugs to turn you into the Incredible Hulk.

I don't mind the technobabble because they don't even PRETEND it makes any kind of sense. And Blink is indeed a very good episode.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

I know. It was even openly mocked in "World War III":

Urmmm... What was it you said your sonic device would do? 'Triplicate the flammability'?

Yep.

You're making it up!

I missed "Blink". Either I forgot about it or CBC advertised it then pre-empted that ep with something else.

But I did just watch "Utopia" and I loved it a lot.

I had to go to work that night after seeing 'Blink' a few weeks ago. Part of the the routine involves walking up to the comms room to retrieve the end of day reports, which involves walking up a creaky staircase and along a creaky admin corridor. I was looking over my shoulder every five steps, even though I knew it would do no good.

The red bull probably didn't help.

"You're not looking at the statue."

"Neither are you."

Sort of harkened back to the way the Time Lords used to deal with their enemies, such as in the last episode of "The War Games":

A forcefield has been placed around you, and your planet —trapping it forever. You have been found guilty on all counts. And you and your murderous associates will be dematerialised. It will be as if you had never existed.

"Blink" was a very good episode out of lengthy line of other very good episodes such as "Human Nature", "The Family of Blood" and "Utopia" (then it deflates slightly with the very fun but rather wobbly "The Sound of Drums" and "The Last of the Time Lords"). Overall Season Three was a pretty darn solid season, even though it sagged halfway through with the almost disastrous Dalek two parter...

I think my favorite 'tech' moment in the newer series was with Captain Jack & Chris Eccleston.

"A sonic screwdriver?! Who looks at a screwdriver and says 'You know, this could use some more sonic!'?"

GOLD! I think the dialogue with the doctor in the DVD was outstanding, incredibly innovative.

Blink is a very good episode. I've been contemplating to this day of showing it in the dark to my friends and while they're distracted, I'd place one of those statues in the room. Then when they're done watching and turn on the lights...
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Too bad we can't buy one of the prop statues. I'd love to have that in the garden waiting for the local primary school kids to walk past.

That's when the kilo of C4 goes off inside them, showering the kids with razor sharp sharps of stone.

That'll get a few sphincters open.
