Cowboy Bebop back on Adult Swim

Post by Patrick Degan »

Trolling the YouTube website, I found some Cowboy Bebop clips including the last seven minutes of "Ballad Of Fallen Angels" —the showdown at the cathedral— and saw in the message traffic that CB recently restarted on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim lineup weeknights. The MeeVee schedule charts show it airing at 1.30 and 4.30 EST after midnight, Monday through Friday.

If you've never seen this show before —do. Programme your VCRs, DVRs, Tivos or what-have-you and catch one of the best cartoons to come from the Land of the Rising Sun.

And try to ignore all the 'zomg CB lololololol' idiots. Just like any other anime wanker idiots, they can ruin a good show if you listen to them. :)

I already have the series on DVD, but I'm curious:

Is the Remastered editions of the 'Cowboy Bebop' DVDs worth buying? I heard there were new scenes in the Remastered editions. Is this true?

Or should I save my money?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

I don't think so. To the best of my knowledge all Bandai did with the remastered reissue was clean up the video and expand the sound channels.

I didn't know about the added scenes. However, if you have a surround sound system, it's totally worth it.

No, there were no added scenes to the DVDs for the remastered editions.

However, there are a hell of a lot more extras on there, and I think they might have included Episode 00 on one of the discs. (Episode 00 was a short promo piece that has been put on the DVDs in Japan but wasn't included with the original US release.)

Fuck, it's back on? It WAS a good anime, just not good enough to have it on for years and just being reruns. Thank you Adult Swim, ANOTHER anime that I've seen every episode to at least half a dozen times, that's now wasting a spot on your line up.

Remember, cable means 'play the same few shows with name recognition eight million times' and not 'play every show out there'. At least in AU.

I'm somehow not surprised. It wasn't so long ago they seemed to play Trigun constantly in a loop.

I'm just stunned they play constant runs of shit that's been on for years, even at like 2am, instead of new interesting stuff people might like to see.

They only have so much money to spend on licensing. Although the fact that they're almost /b/tards in the level of raging douche on occasion, especially occasions dated 4/1, doesn't help too much.

(opinion would be different, but the 4/1 'pranks' are horrible.)

Still, could be worse. I'd rather they brought back Lupin III, since it's been a good while since they aired it... but at least they're not running two episodes of Family Guy per night again... (Which coincidentally, is where my deep abiding hatred of FG comes from...)

Call me nuts, but more shows = people might actually watch their lame channels. It'd be a marketable feature... but as Zod says, anime freaks will simply watch the same shit over and over, so why bother? :)

You know, I think Cowboy Bebop is really awesome, but it's not like I'd watch it on TV, because I already have it. You'd think that a real otaku would have just bought their favourite series and thus wouldn't be inclined to watch it on television.

Yeah, I wish cable channels showed GOOD or UNUSUAL shit, so I could actually watch something new. I bought CB on DVD years and years ago, before I ever saw it on cable, and I have zero interest in watching it. I want to be exposed to new things without having to pay AU$30 a DVD with two episodes of probably crap anime on it.

It goes for all the channels, but people can really watch four or five hours of identical CSI/hospital drama so...

Man, CB.

I remember getting into that a bit late, watching it on Adult Swim. I remember they pulled 'Wild Horses' out of the cycle because it was set to air the night after the Columbia disaster.

I'll be honest, I cried on that episode when I caught it. I'm a big baby.

Wild Horses is cool because, despite all the non-Newtonian flying that plagues the show, it accurately portrays the fact that orbital flight is complicated.

Also it has one of the funniest scenes in the show. It goes something like,

JET: Starting with the mono system, navigation, engine regulator, communications... they're all shot.

SPIKE: I don't get it.

ED: The computer's broke and we're drifting through space to certain oblivion.

SPIKE: Definitely got that.

Adult Swim will play different anime shows on occasion. It's how I originally got into Paranoia Agent. That's certainly different an unusual. Though, lately, they might have gone to pot and started playing crap. I saw them playing Bleach the other night, as if they need another shonen fighting series. Urgh.

While not exactly a bastion of accurate Newtonian physics in space, it should ben oted that Cowboy Bebop does make concessions to reality; all the monocraft appear to have gas based vernier thrusters discretely placed around them, though they're only actually noticeable in Heavy Metal Queen and Jamming With Edward (the later especially so, because Spike triggers one on his cockpit frame manually).

I mean, it's not super-accurate: I'm pretty sure they're getting far too much thrust out of them, but it's an actual concession to how stuff works in space, as opposed to a total ignoring. :)

CB indeed kicks ass. Though I have it on DVD, I have no reason to stay up watching it. In fact, the only reason any anime fan would have is if they haven't seen it before, in which case, what rock did you crawl out of? I can't think of a single anime fan that I know that hasn't seen it already. Multiple Times.

I think this ties in to AS's most common joke in regards to them airing anime (with their newly acquired license to show Deathnote, they made a crack about only 12 people, not including AS employees, are actually going to watch it). Most people who watch anime already have the series on DVD/VHS/ripped to their computers.

Wait wait...They got Death Note?

Well, now I have something to watch besides Futurama reruns. I guess that makes me one of the 12.

I think it goes without saying that if you have Death Note available to show on television, you fucking well put it on.

Whee, Death Note...I'm actually not sure whether I'm less enthusiastic about that or Squidbillies.

I'm glad they're showing Cowboy Bebop again; it gives me something good to watch at a normally crappy time of night for TV, and it really never gets old.

I still haven't seen a couple of episodes, actually, most notably that one with the psychotic gambler.

Ah Cowboy Bebop, the AS rotational anime when they don't have something for that time slot.

As much as I love the series, it amazes me how many times they slot it on the air. Still the ending always gets me.
