Not sure if this has been done before (a search gave me a "general error") so I apologize if is has. Anyhow, what do you think would happen to you if you put on the Ring of Power (LOTR)? Remember, the Great Ring is able to affect the user according to his stature.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might if they screamed all the time for no good reason.
Hmmm, well, unless one of us is really a Maiar in disguise, we'll just pass into the Wraith-realm (like Frodo does)
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

If Gandalf accepted the Ring from Frodo, considering he is a spirit on the par with Sauron could he have defeated Sauron and taken his place as darklord?
I think that's more than likely. Aferall I beleive that Tolien wrote that Sauron was afraid that Aragorn was going to get his hands on the ring in Minas Tirith and was afraid of what would happen then. So obviously a human with strong enough will can dominate the ring and bend it to his will (albiet for the caue of evil) and even challenge the Darklord.

Personally, I don't think so.
Sauron was a Maia spirit like the Istari, but of a higher order. Back before the First Age and before Melkor corrupted him, he was a Maia serving the Vala Aule the Smith. He is described as being one of the most powerful of the Maiar, possibly even the most powerful.
Olorin (Gandalf) was described as being the wisest of the order of Maiar that became the Istari, serving under the Valar Manwe and Varda.
I don't believe that Gandalf, or any of the Istari, were on the same level of power as Sauron.

Well, Sauron had imbued the Ring with much of his power, so it's likely that if Gandalf had put it on it would have strengthened him and weakened Sauron.

Yes, if someone like Gandalf or Galadrial took the Ring, they could very well challenge the Dark Lord single-handedly.
That's why Sauron thought Aragorn had the Ring, because why else would he be marching on Mordor with a measly 7,000-man army?

Sauron's power is equatible with his soul: basically, he put a significant portion (not most, just significant) of his soul into the Ring.
To use the Ring, Gandalf (or anyone) would have to reliquish themselves to the Ring (ie, Sauron). This would then allow Sauron to gain control over the wearer of the Ring, binding them to his will.

Gandalf and Galadriel (who both wielded other rings of power) both implied that they'd be able to defeat sauron but that the nature of the ring would corrupt them and they would become as evil as Sauron had been.....hence the whole speech that galadriel gave about a dark queen instead of a dark lord....

Spanky, Galadriel implied that she would become a Dark queen in the book and film. Gandalf also implied that he would become more terrible than the dark lord in the book and the film.

Keevan: Good, then you and I are generally on the same page.
Stravo: That could refer to Sauron at his current level, but each would still be dominated by Sauron's will when they gave themselves to the Ring to use it's power.

"And besides, who cares if a monster destroys Australia?"
Personally, If I had only had it for a short enough period: Get rid of it ASAP...yeah, invisiblity and all is fun, but skulking under a mountain for several hundred years (Gollum), or even just being stretched and corrupted that long would not be...
And Sauron was more terrified of someone destroying the Ring, not using it.
Incorrect. I clearly remember it being stated that it never even occured to Sauron that someone would want to destroy the ring. He assumed that whoever had it would use it.
Screw ale...get me mead and you might get my support

I thought that was part of the temptation of the ring...to make you think that you could beat Sauron. Even Sam had that delusion when he carried the ring.
