Ultimate Headgear

Post by Peptuck »

From the funky swooping beetle helmets that are almost ubiquitous to Star Wars to the buttplug helmets of 40k's Eldar to.....whatever that damn thing was Picard had on his head in Insurrection, we've all seen some pretty outrageous hats, helmets, and headgear in sci-fi.

But.....which one reigns supreme in terms of style, pomp, size, or just plain silliness?

There's something to be said about the hats of the Imperial Army from Heresy era 40k, which proudly live on with the Vostroyan First Born. It's much like wearing a small bear upon your head.

For cuteness and silliness, there's Baby Fuzzy and the knock off hat versions of him from Little Fuzzy, H Beam Piper. I can't find a illustration online, although I've seen one.

For those who haven't read it, he's a small, extremely cute native child of the planet Zarathustra who likes sitting on people's heads.

I liked that gold Giger-esque monstrosity that Skeletor wore when he transfomed in the movie HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.

I couldn't find a good image, there is a tiny one here:

Yeah, but that's because the Imperial Army were really Cossacks. :D

Have a very nice day.

Oh yeah, that weird thing with the pig snout...I'm not sure if they were going for a Ganon lookalike, or if it was supposed to look like the nasal cavities (or whatever they're called) on a skull.

You can't really beat the Spaceballs helmets for simplicity combined with utter uselessness. I get the feeling whoever designed them liked ping-pong balls just a little bit too much...

The Scarran War Minister's hats in farscape were pretty outrageous.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

I was always rather fond of the GW Ice Warriors of Valhalla Lieutenant's monstrous cap :)

Rifts, old style Coalition armor, particularly the psi-stalker variant.
"Hey, this skull/gas mask isn't good enough, let's throw some spikes on it!"

And then of course there's the SAMAS, which replaces the spikes with dredlocks.

There are very few illustrations, but go here. He does Krieg justice and some of his stuff (Iron Warriors) is supposed was in the Aussie White Dwarf.

Here's the rest, and here's some stuff he did before he's put on addignment again.

Quite frankly, no Commissar has ever looked so badass as that.
