Blade Runner: The Final Cut

Post by Tsyroc »

Has anyone else watched the "the Final Cut" of Blade Runner yet?

I'm not a huge fan of any version of the movie so I can't catalog all the stuff that's different between this version and the other two that I've seen. All I can say is that I did like it and thought it was a little better than the other two versions, although, at times it seemed like he might have gone for different takes just to be different. Still, Ridley Scott says in the intro that he prefers this verison.

It helped me that it's been so long since I've seen the theatrical version that I no longer remember most of Harrison Ford's voice over. I only had a few bits pop into my head so that was nice. Before I really couldn't get into the difference between the voice over version and the non-voice over version because the frickin' voice over was in my head whether it was in the movie or not.

I haven't watched any of the other version yet, including the work print, and I've not gotten to the extras disk or any of the commentaries.

The brief case that the set comes in is pretty cool. 8)
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.

Saw it at the cinema a couple of weeks ago. IIRC, there's at least one dialogue tweak, and a few extra scenes (the intro of the LA skyline segues directly into the Replicant interview at the beginning, and there's some shots of Deckard on his balcony with a Scotch).
"So you want to live on a planet?"
"No. I think I'd find it a bit small and wierd."
"Aren't they dangerous? Don't they get hit by stuff?"

I got my set on Wednesday and while I haven't watched any of the versions of the film yet, I have poured over virtually all of the extras. So far I'd say it's definitely worth the purchase and more importantly, the wait. :)

The briefcase and its extras are indeed very cool.

Oh, for those wondering how "limited" the five-disc briefcase set it, they're numbered out of 103,000. Mine's in the 6500s, IIRC.

They have always been there, the balcony scene was always there its just that now its been sharpened up you can see the city backdrop more.

Essentially the Final Cut really sharpens up the look of the film (which was already fantastic) and smooths off some of the rough edges and dodgey edits that existed in the 1992 cut.
