SGA 4x19: Kindred - Pt. 2
Well, on one hand we've got Beckett back (whose death last seaon still ranks as one of the stupidest decisions in the entire history of the Stargate franchise IMHO). On the other hand, I'm really disatisified with how he was brought back (especially the plot hole of how Michael duplicated his memories). Combined with an uneven pacing, the penultimate episode of Season 4 is ultimately meh in my book.

I actually thought it wasn't as bad as it could have been, though that may be because I went in expecting pure crap. Michael makes a pretty decent villain IMO, much better than Generic Space Vampire, and it was good to finally see Halling back (in non-Todd form, of course). Ultimately forgettable though, like much of season 4 has been.

Well, to be fair, that was mostly because the actor wanted to quit (from what I understand, anyway). They've been pretty quiet as to the details, which leads me to suspect it was pretty juicy.JME2 wrote:(whose death last seaon still ranks as one of the stupidest decisions in the entire history of the Stargate franchise IMHO)

I was under the impression it was TPTB, not the actor. If so, my mistake. But even still, the way Beckett was written out was lazy. They certainly did a better job of writing out Ford and Weir...Brother-Captain Gaius wrote:Well, to be fair, that was mostly because the actor wanted to quit (from what I understand, anyway). Why couldn't they have blown up the clone earlier and then have the real Carson stay around for the rest of Season 4 and then on to Season 5?
I ship Eino Ilmari Juutilainen x Lydia V. Litvyak.

Stofsk: What are you, his mother?
The Yosemite Bear: Obviously, which means that he's grounded, and that she needs to go back to sucking Mr. Coffee's cock.

Because it would have required making him a very often reccuring character, which creates problems in the real world, as well as being problematic conceptually with Jewel Strait's character being around.
Anyway, it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared. They handled the "resurrection" in a relatively good way, all things considered (yay, no RepliBeckett), and some of the conversations (especially the McKay-Beckett ones) were very good. Its still a convulted mess, but they did a pretty decent lemonade with those lemons.

I liked one McKay/Beckett quote:Netko wrote:Anyway, it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared. Beckett: "You told me that the real Carson Beckett wouldn't sit around, he would be out there with his friends."
McKay: "Well the real Carson Beckett doesn't listen to me."
Probably butchered by my memory, but funny.

This is where the great character writing comes in. McKay is one of my favourites. He is a seriouly flawed fussy little prick sometimes, but rises to the chalenge often enough to redeem all his flaws. (One of the best Mckay moments, is when he, Sheperd and one other scientist were stuck on a planet battling a single Wraith. He is atending the wounded scientist, but keeps looking over his shoulder at the door, longing to help Sheperd. When final given leave to help he is scared shitless, but not only doesn't panic, he holds his ground in the face of a charging Wraith. He doesn't know quite what to do, but follows Sheperd's in structions to the letter. (Take out your weapon and shoot him!-my gun's empty, now what?-Reload and shoot him!- I am out of ammo, now what?- RUN!- ok!) He only runs when told to! That is courage.
He is hanging out with manly men and it is rubbing off, much to his improvement.
His horrible dismay at the end was heart wrenching. As was Ronan's. (He was this close to crying as he hugged Becket goodbye.) As much as McKay has progressed, he still has trouble dealing with many things. Most of them the interpersonal.

The pecking order was on display in the episode before last (IIRC) when he's leading Lee and Kavanagh etc to the Jumper - Lee (IIRC again) was waving his pistol around and didn't really know what he was doing, McKay by contrast was professional and didn't have the patience for his ineptitude. He is hanging out with manly men and it is rubbing off, much to his improvement.
