SGA Episode 507: Whispers

Post by Anarchist Bunny »

Thought I'd put this up since I usually look to see what to expect of this weeks episode before I watch it, but found none.

Now I think I understand why.

Possibly the worst episode of the series, definitely of the season. I had hoped from the synopsis that it would bring back the neater if blatant rip off of Xenomorphs Hybrid, but instead they gave us Lame Blind Reavers.

Everything in the episode failed from the writing, to the horrible attempt at horror directing, to the acting(with even likable regulars phoning it in or just poorly directed). It felt more like a homebrewed youtube depiction of a fanfic.

None of the action was entertaining, the fog made if visually boring, the horror wasn't even bad enough to be campy, the all girl team was rather dull, with the girl introduced at the start of the season being more like a 13 year old Counter Strike playing boy, and Becketts love interest ham fisted in. Everyone behaved largely like they were suffering from the parasite McKay had two weeks ago.

Ezri Dax is hotter with slightly longer hair. That's all I'm saying about that.

Quite frankly, I think that's all you CAN say about that. I debated starting the topic myself, but found the episode hardly worth commenting on. Definitely below "meh" quality here.
It's Jodan, not Jordan. If you can't quote it right, I will mock you.

It sparked a geeky reaction upon seeing Dax but beyond that the episode is basically a cliche horror movie in 45min form.
The real thing that annoyed me was the constant 'vanishing' members bullshit they were pulling off every 5 minutes. In a crappy teen movie you can pass that by as teenage stupidity but these are supposed to be trained personnel who are on a planet where Michael has been experimenting.
Afterall the horror movies that are well known it really is stupid to believe none of these people have the brains to realise that going off on your own is generally a bad idea. Especially when these fuckheads never bothered to check if their was more rooms in the facility until AFTER the things had been released.

Right from the beginning I knew this episode was doomed. It was a chore to sit and watch the whole thing.

It was so fucking boring after 15 minutes that I jumped through the episode in a couple of jumps on the player so I saw it all in about 1 minute. So godamn boring I regretted wasting my life on it.

The mist/fog that the hybrids were supposedly releasing from the vents/gills on their necks was what made them a threat, because they interfered with the functioning of the team's radios and flashlights.

and it seems made them act irrationally.

It was an interesting idea for an episode, but it caught up in the Horror tropes it was trying to emulate.

I don't think it was as bad as some on here suggest. Definitely not the worst Atlantis episode. That is still the episode with the kids in series 1.

It begins to make more sense if you let yourself believe the fog was effecting their judgment. And yeah, I've never seen Beckett so unlikable. In general, I really dislike the idea of these "tag team" episodes where you take two or three main characters and leave the rest out or in bit parts. Do they do it to save money? I don't see how the episode was improved by not having the usual team in there with Beckett. (Except perhaps that having such a situation challenge the main team would stretch credibility even more).

It's so that the other actors have time to focus on their big episodes.

There is usually one a season for each actor.

Don't tell me you hate that episode with the kids because the team left the ZPM there. :D

Too bad the episode didn't even TRY to give an explanation. The only negative aspect of the fog was it disrupted the flashlights. I doubt it affected their judgement because even outside the fog everyone made bad decisions.

They did give a hint,

"This Fog can't be natural, who know what long term exposure could do to a person" and various statements to that effect.

And no, everyone was exposed to the fog at some point in the episode. The only times anyone was "outside" the fog was when they were in the buildings, but even then it makes zero sense that there was no fog in there, it would have to have been at a lower density but those buildings weren't pressure sealed.
