How many particle beams...

Post by DodoBrd16 »

How many particle beams at 8,000 terrawatts a pop would it take to defeat the shields of an ISD?

Thanks for the help.

Ah, so i guess you were. I don't have any solid figures for ISD shields, but Acclamator shields are rated at 7e22 watts. 8000 Tw - 8e15 w - is 8,750,000 times too weak to penetrate the shields of an Acclamator, so it would take that many firing at once to hurt the shields. ISD shields are much stronger than those of an Acclamator. Perhaps someone else has some more substantial figures for ISD shields.

The Mods over at B5tech are a bit....jumpy when it comes to anything nearing cross fire.

I'm doing this for a fan fic, and I want the bloody thing to be some what accurate. I've read to many where Babylon 5 is able to fight off a full blown ISD....or a few Star Furys are able to bring down the shields...its rather annoying.

The whole reason I need the numbers of the beams is because I have entire EF battle groups going up against a single ISD.

Something like.....well right now...from what info I've been able to gather...its around....12 to 1. Though alot of those ships are playing air defense, to give the larger Warlocks and Omegas time to bring down the shields.

Havent formulated Minbari battle tactics for this...their guns pack alot more wallop.

Right well remeber an ISDs shields can take a beating from high Gigaton to low Terraton level weapons for at leats 30 minutes(ROTJ)

I know.

Thats why I have entire EF battle groups going after a single ISD.

In the fan fic, only a small hand full of ISDs have entered the milkyway. A bare scouting force.

It takes hundreds of warships to push back just those few. Primarily those of the two major powers, the Earth Alliance and the Minbari Federations with support from the Rangers and the former League.

I'll probably have to change the primary hunter killer groups of the EF to Warlocks, with Omega and Hyperions providing fire support and air defense.

I figure with over lapping interception grids, numerous EF warships could probably drastically decrease the amount of fire from an ISD. Probably give them the time necessary to take down the shields.

Provided that the energy interaction of turbolasers is similar enough to that shown by B5 weapons, it is definitely possible, if the interceptors and such on B5 ships can't destabilise a turbolaser bolt then B5 has no chance

True.

But for this fan fic, the interceptors will be effective.

Not saying that B5 style interceptors wouldnt be effective, they most likely will be since they are designed to defend against numerous races pulse weaponry.

However there is the chance that it might not.

For this fan fic though, it will.

SW Shields though Can be Over-whelmed if you pump enough damage into-them in a very short period of time and thats Kinetic and Energy Damange not Energy alone(Somthing SW shields are highly resistant to)

Thier best bet is to conentrate full power on ONE spot in hopes of disrupting it enough to get to the hull

There are Speclative Low-End Numbers for ISDs but you need(Hmm lemme think) roughly fifty Omega's I belive to get a quarter of the power a full volly from Three Squadens of SW Snubfighters are able to delive

Realy I dont know enough about B5 besides the fact its slightly less powerful than ST to realy give you an solid numbers

Thats I was figuring.

Nice to have that Idea backed up.

So the particle beam weapons should be effective against the Shields?

Enough in one specfic spot yes

See an ISD when its under fire has two options

1. Shield till it dies and when it does *melts down the Shield Generator Coils(Or whatever it uses)
2. Or to the point of Overheating then auto-cut off as it cools down, and re-collects energy to bring shield back up

Its how shields deal with damage Diffrently such as the MF is set to hold till it burns out while say X-Wings and A-Wings and nearly all snubfighters are set to cut off at overload point

It can be observered in the Bigger Ships when *Holes will appear in the shielding instead of the Entire Shield coming down on one side(Ref Bacta War the Attack in the Aallderan system or howver you spell it)

Depends on how the Shields are set up/Angled and Alinged and which basic setting they are on(Some older ships its hard-wired)

I read your post where you were mistaken about the whole Watt issue, and I just wanted to say that I admire a person who is willing to accept correction, and learn from it.

When you get around to posting it, make sure you post it here I would love to read it! :D
