Whatever Happened To: That Honorverse Game

Post by Master_Baerne »

So apparently, there was supposed to be a game set in the Honorverse appearing sometime last year at this website. Alas, it didn't quite pan out, and there's been no activity since late December. I'm rather unhappy about this, since I was looking forward to playing - does anyone know what happened?
Conversion Table:

2000 Mockingbirds = 2 Kilomockingbirds
Basic Unit of Laryngitis = 1 Hoarsepower
453.6 Graham Crackers = 1 Pound Cake
1 Kilogram of Falling Figs - 1 Fig Newton
Time Between Slipping on a Banana Peel and Smacking the Pavement = 1 Bananosecond
Half of a Large Intestine = 1 Semicolon

While it makes me gleeful to see it go down in flames, I'm sure it was just IP concerns. Weber's handlers are very defensive about it, despite the fact that the Honorverse fan community is the only thing that they've got going for them in this regard. It's not like anyone else is going to touch it, there's simply no market for it and it's not well known enough.

So consider it killed off by the people who would have benefited from it, down the line.

The best part is, actual universe-accurate mechanics (Intercept vectors! Standoff ranges! 3D!) virtually guarantee it to fail as a playable game. While changing mechanics to make it work would greatly annoy the fans.

I'd like to see an Honorverse game that really works, but I can't see how that can be even vaguely possible. All of the things that make the setting different in terms of a space battle game just aren't practical to implement without making it the weirdest and clunkiest space game ever.

Also, those Impeller Wedges just look dumb in the screenshots. And dumbbell ships don't sell.

I'm pretty sure that one's been canceled. The Saganami Island Tactical Simulator looks to still be available. I saw one of their Jayne's books, and they were the ones that led to the Incredible Shrinking Starships after doing density calculations.

I can't speak for any OTHER Honorverse fan of course but I was hoping for something that WOULDN'T bother with all this 3d realspace long-range combat stuff, or at least not bother the PLAYER with it unduly. A spacegoing version of 'Harpoon' perhaps.
And Nephtys is right, those impeller wedges look patently silly. But then, so do the starships.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'
