New Judge Dredd film

Post by Srelex »

Who else has heard of this?

On one hand, no codpiece and it's closer to the comics. On the other, no more 'I AM DEH LURGH!'

Huh. IMDB lists Ezquerra and Wagner in the writing credits. I wonder if that's just acknowledging they came up with the comic or if they're actually onboard with the film. Be pretty awesome if they are.

I just read some of the Judge Dredd anthology I Am The Law, so I'm pretty excited about this. Judge Anderson has already been cast, so I wonder if it will be a Judge Death story.

Some more titbits:

Karl Urban is apparently happye(nay, insistent) to keep the helmet on (I hope that left-hand pic isn't from the film! )

No idea who Olivia Thirlby is, but she's . The [url=http://www.beyondhollywood.com/judge-dr ... t-details/]plot is apparently about Anderson's graduating as a Judge (that last link made McAfee complain it was trying to exploit a browser vulnerability. YMMV).

I might be being rather to nerdy but the stubble doesn't seem right to me.

Doesn't Dredd have a major thing about not liking facial hair, I seem to remember him not liking another Judge during the Judge Child Saga as he has a moustache, it was suggeted at the time that he might have ordered the facial hair wareing judge to have a dangerour procedure carried out on him just because he didn't like his moustache.

It's a reheresal pick reportedly; they shave it off when they start filming proper.

Needs more paldrons.

No really, it does. The rest of the armour looks way too subdued for that helmet.

Yeah, I prefer the armor from the Stallone film, even if this helmet looks better. It also looks like they tried to find a compromise between the Lawgiver from the comics and something that wouldn't make the audience snicker.

If it weren't missing the semi-circular ammo selector thingy that gun would be a dead ringer for the Lawgiver MkII.

Is it just me or is that Olivia Thirlby chick a little small to be playing a Judge? I mean I get that women are typically smaller than their male counterparts, but all the pictures I've seen of Judge Anderson suggest that she's not exactly a lightweight.

Wasn't she the judge based on Debbie Harry from Blondie? I suppose she should have whatever physical attributes the singer has.

Also, as a psi-judge, does she really need to be that imposing?

SHOULDER ARMOUR OF AUTHORITY.
Totally agreed.

Then again if Srelex is right and this is just a rehearsal/casting pic, then hopefully they'll cook up a more awesome costume for the actual shooting. With super huge death-pauldrons of justice.

Yeah, that was my thought. If it wasn't a "real" shot he may have simply not wanted to wear the big pauldrons.

On the other hand, if they're trying to be more naturalistic, minimizing the pauldrons might make more sense--it'd be more practical for the actor and in real life.

As someone who never read the comics, I'd have to agree that the helmet overwhelms the rest of the armor in that shot. He doesn't need Warhammer 40K Space Marine pauldrons (Sorry, my first thought seeing the picture was someone packing a bolt pistol) but making the armor a little bulkier would help balance out the helmet and the rather large gun. Alternately, if they can trim the helmet down a bit, the uniform might work better.

Frankly, it looks to me like the helmet is a size or two too big for the guy wearing it.

If they've got Ezquerra on board (which they apparently have) then there's no reason for Dredd to look any less awesome than this:

Except for the fact that he may need to raise his right arm at some point. /snark

Anyway, I like Urban so I'm down for this. The Stallone version was more or less shitty, but I did like Armand Assante as the villain. I love it when the badguy chews scenery, and there's a classic bit where Stallone shouts "You betrayed the law!" and Assante bellows...

"LAAAAWWW!"

...in this sneering tone of voice. Whenever I'm around my dad or brother and Assante turns up on TV, someone inevitably ends up doing their impression.

Blah blah random. But yes, looking forward to this.

If he doesn't have a goddamn GOLDEN EAGLE on a shoulder then it's clearly not Dredd /fattynerd.

You're right to be sarcastic. Judge Dredd would still be the same character if he weren't a ridiculous parody of Hollywood cliches. Hopefully they'll replace all the silly parts of the background, like the Kylie and Dannii Minogue Block War, Winona Ryder Mega Mall (lots of shoplifting) and Jack Kevorkian Street (where all the Death cults can be found) with totally serious, sensible, Nolan-esque grit. In fact, it would be an even better Judge Dredd movie if we ditched his embarrassing name and just called him Judge Smith.

Why should a genre movie based around a somewhat obscure and over-the-top comic book character ever need to cater to its fanbase fatty nerds to survive?

BTW, I tend to agree with the popular imdb opinion that Robocop captured the spirit of Judge Dredd in many way and I hope the film takes a similar tone. If that means Dredd needs to wear bigger-than-life pauldrons, then I'm cool with it.

DudeGuyMan, are you sure you aren't my brother? We do the same thing (imitate Assante's "LAAAAAAAWWWWWuuughhhhghghhh"), although sometimes we like to mix it up with a little Fatal Instinct.

I agree completely with the fact that you need the ridiculousness to make it Dredd-ish.

Robocop won on many of these counts just because of the silly ads.

Whatever that movie was worth, it was only because of Assante. He chewed the scenery most excellently, and really sold his asinine dialogue. Check out 1:12 to 1:30 of this clip. It's by far the best acting in the whole ridiculous movie.

Better yet just watch this over and over.
