Vote for the Next Enterprise!
StarTrek Online is holding a contest to design the Enterprise -F, and I’ve thrown my hat into the ring along with a couple of our other members (who should post in this thread too.)

It's pretty difficult to come up with something that hasn't been done before, yet is still unquestionably the "Enterprise" at a glance, from all orthos and in thumbnail.
Ideally the viewer should recognize the Enterprise first, and then identify the differences. Additionally those differences must indicate an understanding of the design lineage, but should play out in an unexpected and interesting way (avoid stretched sovereigns.)
On top of those difficulties, one must strive to create something both attractive and believable.
Not a lightweight undertaking.
In retrospect I feel that I've done well, but there are things I would do differently given another chance.
The engineering section looks a bit clunky, the deflector dish is very vanilla, and it’s cavity ought to angle upwards to match the curvature of the neck (like the Enterprise-D). Additionally, I ought to have given the nacelle struts a sexier shape, curving them in toward the front and pulling them back to make them thinner from the side, and perhaps giving them an hourglass feel by reducing their width in the center. They feel sturdy, but in a utilitarian way for which there is no precedent. Moving away from a consolidated primary and secondary hull was risky, but in combining the nacelle struts with the neck, I feel I've held true to a the consolidated hull philosophy, albeit in a new direction.
Somehow despite the elongated saucer and streamlined nacelle features my design feels more at home between the Enterprise C and D, or perhaps as an alternative to the E. I've failed to create a new branch off the same limb.
Part of this is an attempt to re-create the hull texture of TMP Enterprise. Namely subtle differences in hull plating specularity. That style is my personal favorite, but was abandoned in TNG and beyond. Cryptic will of course be creating their own texture set(s) however, so I felt comfortable emulating my favorite style for the sake of attractiveness over continuity, but this may have been unwise.
The nacelles could be a bit lower, closer to the saucer, and truer to the Enterprise's characteristic silhouette. My saucer is rather lumpy, and perhaps a little too reminiscent in shape to an egg, and my windows aren’t all perfectly to scale. My deck heights are also slightly inconsistent, and at the top of the neck the deck with the airlock is actually angled up slightly, though I suppose this is okay in a... what do you call the enclosed ramp that leads from the gate to the airplane?... Googling... ah, a “jetway” or "airbridge" sort of way.
Overall, I should have come up with something a bit more streamlined and compact, with a bit more attention to the characteristics that evolved after TNG, but I’m very proud of my work, and very grateful to you fine folks for helping me develop it.
Please vote, and wish me luck!

I like it. I wish there was a bigger, full-size view available, though. The two (pathetic) view sizes we get don't really let you examine anything in detail.
It's an interesting thing you did, connecting the nacelles to both the saucer and the engineering hull, and making them wide enough to have internal volume of their own. It's actually an attractive feature in my opinion.
I'd gladly pilot a ship of this class into battle or peace negotiations, Enterprise or Otherwise.

Win or lose, you totally need to have a hero shot of this Enterprise for your forum avatar.

The original is 4096x1024, and you can make out the uniform color of the crew members standing on the hanger deck If I win I'll give it to them, and maybe they'll show it to you

Re: Vote for the Next Enterprise!
I'll be voting everyday this contest is open. It's lame that the current #1 just looks like a re-imagined version of the A. Hopefully that means it'll be discounted for unoriginality.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."
Re: Vote for the Next Enterprise!
A detail caught my eye in the shot on the contest site. I don't say it's bad or anything (not that it can be changed anyway), but does it really make sense to have a row on escape pods on the nacelles like that?

Re: Vote for the Next Enterprise!
Hm. Well they sure LOOK like escape pods. Might've needed a bit of an explanation.
Anyway, nice to see your design finally complete. You really put a lot of work into it. It looks great.
Mine could've looked just as good (okay, not as good, but maybe close) if I'd bothered to continue after learning I'm not eligible for the contest. Maybe.

When is the announcement of the winner?
I've been following the competition and the design threads, and I have to chip in and say I love the design.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Voted for ya. Congrats dude, great work. Plus you're currently first in the "highest rated" category, and 4th in "most votes".

Okay, in motion that's truly classy. Voted!
Uraniun, the music is Freedom Fighters- Two Steps From Hell. IIRC, it's from one of the the Star Trek trailers and is rather good.

They do a lot of great epic songs around 2 minutes. Perfect for movie trailers. I recommend checking them out if you're into such things. The best album is "Invincible" followed by "Nemesis" the others are only okay.

I would say the only thing I dislike, is the design of the shuttle bay. Too TOS and not enough TNG for when this ship is supposed to exist.
Hope you get it though.

Hey- can you guys see where the all the torpedo launchers, phasers and thrusters are? Like, do you think it would be obvious to the casual observer, even in the small version? I did what I could to prep for it, but that jpg compression really kicked my ass.
