Lord of the Mountains

Post by amigocabal »

I just read this book. It was relatively short compared to S.M. Stirling's previous books in the series. The main setting is Horse Heaven Hills near the Columbia River, where Rudi Mackenzie, dba High King Artos I of Montival, and his host must fight a decisive battle.
Spoiler
Rudi kills Martin Thurston, a general and President of a surviving splinter of the United States of America run from Boise, Idaho. But seconds before that, his horse Epona is mortally wounded.

After the battle, Rudi goes to a lake near the Timberline Lodge and he and his wife Mathilda receive visions of their ancestors and descendants throughout time.

I was really surprised by the relative thinness of the book compared to the other ones in the series. There's only one more book left to finish the tale of this generation post-Change, and I imagine it'll be the ultimate final confrontation between Montival/Iowa and the CUT. First half of the book, likely the liberation of Boise and some sort of crazy shenanigans that stagger Iowa's invasion force, and then the final battle to liberate what was central Montana.

It would not surprise me is something went wrong on Iowa's side.

Well, I mean, something's got to happen, or otherwise it's honestly pretty much "Talalala, Boise is liberated and the CUT is annihilated". Aside from the final confrontation between Artos and Sethaz.
