Red Dwarf: Series X (spoilers)

Post by Dartzap »

Ep 1 just aired on Dave. I've not had a chance to see it myself yet, but from what I've heard so far, overall reaction from even the more cynical side of the fandom seems to have been very positive.

Rather looking forward to this myself. I must admit that I am squarely on the cynical side especially after the car crash that was Back to Earth, but I'm willing to give it a chance. Unfortunately the UKTV website seems to have died screaming from all the traffic, so I can't even view the page never mind log on.

The sets look a bit better and not shoe-string budget like Back to Earth.
Story - Typical Red Dward stupid so nothing newthere
Jokes - Meh, didnt find it funny for the most part

I seem to have missed a few miniutes at the start but I got the impression they have basically turned the cast back into Series 3 without much explanation.
Fair enough I guess but... some closure on what happened to the rest of the crew after Series 8 or even Rimmer would be welcome.

I noticed a lack of Holly as well - Major let down.

Finally got around to watching it. You know what? I really fucking enjoyed it.

The lack of continuity doesn't really bother me, since Red Dwarf has never been big on that (Exhibit A: The way Lister's pregnancy was handwaved away between Series 2 and 3). The lack of Holly was a bit of downer, but apparently they couldn't get either Norman Lovett or Hattie Hayridge to come back. A pity, but it can't be helped.

Danny John-Jules looks like he never left, he's still the same Cat and gets the best joke in the episode by a country mile. Craig Charles if anything has improved leaps and bounds in his acting ability since Series 8.

Bottom line. If the rest of the episodes are as good as this I will be a very happy man indeed.

Finally saw it. I really enjoyed that! Got a few belly laughs out of it! Had to laugh at the fact the ship appears to have morphed again!

Just saw it. It was ok. Got some laughs. But I agree with Predator, it feels like an episode from a lot earlier in Red Dwarf rather than a post Back To Earth 'Nine years later' episode.

The moose question was really the highlight of the episode, had nothing to do with the plot.

I wonder if the simulant babe in the corner will still be there in later episodes.

So just saw the second episode. Even more meh. Than the first. Again, not a bad concept. But mixed continuity there. The Lister being his own dad is good continuity. The automated medibay less so.

Anyway fewer laughs on the ground here and it was rather predictable.

Was it not specifically an automated dentist, and not a full medibay, thus avoiding conflict with previous medibays we've seen?

Nah. There was an automated dentist but also the automated medibay thing as well. That Lister gets parenting advice from and sets up the Lister Jnr account with.

To be completely fair it could have been added when Red Dwarf was rebuilt the original pre-cutback designs and not used in the season because they had proper medical staff anyway. Meh, that sort of thing is not as bothersome to me as the episode just not being that entertaining.

Really? I found the second episode considerably better than the first. The jokes weren't as predictable and the whole Pre use of regulations, the punishments handed down to Lister, etc ... all good entertainment.

As for the medibay, I have to assume it was an addition when Red Dwarf was rebuilt a few seasons back.

Come on guys, this is Red Dwarf. Continuity is something the writers use when they can't think of a reason not to.
More on-topic, I've seen both of these thus far and they feel like classic Red Dwarf episodes, at least to me. Hopefully they'll keep this up...

I was going to say! Thought there was jokes for anyone in the last few episodes, to be honest. Its no different to the first few series, which I watched again recently.

Did think this one was *slightly* weaker than the previous two, but its still funnier than the majority of most current sitcoms.

Did anyone else watch episode 4? It definitely seemed like the weakest one so far. Sort of like basing an entire episode on the luck virus instead of just using it as a convenient plot device.

Have to agree. There where some good moments but it was if they had a few different ideas and not really following through on any.

"The Beginning" was great. Finally Arnold J. Rimmer got his moment of glory.
