Revolution S1E4 "the Plague Dogs"

Post by amigocabal »

In this episode, Aaron and Maggie catch up with Charlie, Miles, and Nora in Lowell, Indiana. But someone else is hunting them. We also learn more about Captain Neville, and get a few flashbacks.

Captain Neville reveals to Danny that he has a son. Danny tries to escape, and gets caught in a storm, and Neville takes him to a shelter.
Spoiler
Later on, the storm compromises the shelter, and Danny saves Neville. Neville keeps custody of Danny.
We see a scene in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where General Monroe speaks to a guest of his.
Spoiler
That guest is Rachel Matheson, Danny and Charlie's mother. He says that Danny will be here by tomorrow, which implies what forms of transportation the Monroe Republic has access to.
We see Maggie have flashbacks of her children, which were triggered by the events of the previous episode. She had been in Seattle, of all places, which would have turned into a death zone.
Spoiler
She manages to walk all the way to Buffalo, New York, and is dismayed to learn that there are no tall ships or steamboats available to sail her British arse to England. She considered committing suicide, believing her children to have died in the chaos that swept the whole island. It was then that she met Ben.

It is significant that Buffalo survived, as they somehow managed to fight back the starving hordes, the battles which likely destroyed the ships.

And Maggie has to be a badass herself, to have walked all the way across the Cascades, the Rockies, and the plains.

These scenes set the stage for a later scene.
Spoiler
Maggie is stabbed by a lone survivalist. One of her arteries is cut, and she bleeds to death. She looks at her phone, which briefly showed images of her sons just days before, due to the magic pendant. She dreams of reading The Wizard of Oz to her sons just before dying. It was a sad scene.

The writers did miss an opportunity, as a commenter on another blog pointed out. "Also they could have done something a lot better than a stab-and-run. If that dude kidnapped Maggie instead of Charlie and put her in the gun situation instead, that would have been a million times better. Especially if they had Charlie open the door making her the cause of death."
And for more flashbacks.
Spoiler
The Mathesons were wandering near the death zones years after the Blackout. Davenport, Iowa is only one hundred seventy-five miles west of Chicago, along the 88. Even at ten miles a day, it would have taken less than three weeks for them to reach the Iowa state line. Of course, it is possible that the National Guard occupied the Mississippi River crossings, with orders to gun down anyone who tries to cross in an easterly direction.
and we learn why a certain character surrendered herself to the Monroe militia.
Spoiler
Rachel had surrendered herself to keep her kids safe. Miles had accepted her surrender. This does beg the question. How did they manage to make this deal without Ben knowing about it?
And we do see something in the preview of the next episode.Spoiler
The Monroe Republic has at least one working steam locomotive, making it possible to travel from Indiana to Pennsylvania in less than a day. This does beg the question of how prevalent locomotive rail travel is between the Mississippi and the Rockies.

Well, they had thunder, but guess the mysterious (insert anomaly here) thing doesn't affect lightning. Really, don't know why they didn't just base this on a massive world-wide EMP attack, but guess they couldn't have then said - no electricity fifteen years into the future without the USB thingie with an EMP attack.

That, and everyone on the show looks like they stepped fresh off a J Crew catalog.

if the anomaly serves to increase electrical resistance in solids, but not liquids and gases...

I used to live in that area. Spoiler
I think all of the bridges would have been pretty easy to defend. The I-74 twin bridges are fairly high and narrow, plus they were toll bridges at one point so there are places in the middle where people can be stationed.

The Government Bridge comes from the Rock Island arsenal which is on an island in the middle of the Mississippi. That bridge can pivot to let water traffic through so it should be easy enough to prevent people from crossing on that bridge. It is also set up for both road and rail traffic, each on a different level.

The Centennial Bridge from Rock Island, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa I have less experience with. IIRC it's still fairly narrow and doesn't provide much in the way of protection. I also think it's the only bridge in the area that specifically had walkways for pedestrians but I might be incorrect in regards to the other bridges.

I do not know if the pivoting engines are electrical, or require electric spark plugs. In any event, soldiers can occupty the bridge if it can not be pivoted for some reason.
And here is the promo for the next episode "Soul Train"
