We see Tom Neville's life in the aftermath of the Blackout. to protect his family, he beat a neighbor severely, possibly to death, who had broken into his house. Neville was visibly shaken.
While even the most naive of rebels would not be surprised at Monroe experimenting with steam engines, the rebels were surprised that Monroe had a locomotive as far west as Noblesville (a town near Indianapolis). This implies that Monroe has multiple steam locomotives operating in the greater Philadelphia area (and, of course, stationary steam engines used for industrial applications). Indeed, in a later scene we see a functioning railroad station serving civilian passengers, not just militia soldiers on active duty.
Nora initially wanted to destroy the train, and she dismisses concerns that Danny might ber killed by saying that the others should rescue Danny first. She tries to stop the bomb when the train leaves early with Danny on it, but is stabbed by a rebel who wants that train to blow.
"Nate" is actually Jason, Neville's son.
I did enjoy the focus on Neville. He was a family man who was not violent. We see how he had to change his behavior just to survive. It was touching on how he had to train tbhe young Jason on howe to use a knife.
