Trailer is full serious, Mandarin is the villain and we get repeated shots of Tony Stark in the snow somewhere not to mention the beautiful shot of his penthouse being blown up and burying him alive. The comic guys can analysis this this frame by frame. But the thing I looked for in the previous Iron man movies was Tony Stark being a funny drunk billionaire and now here is the super serious trailer.

Not sure how to feel, my expectations are not raised or lowered by this trailer, I'll go to see it because hey Marvel movie and I'm already looking forward to the after credit sequence. Wonder how much they will reference from the Avengers.

I'm somewhat surprised that, judging from that trailer, Tony's place doesn't have an early-warning system and an air-defense network, given that he's outed himself as Iron Man and has enemies to spare. Three slow-moving helicopters really shouldn't be a credible threat to a Starktech air defense system.

He lives on the coast of Malibu, there are many helicopters that fly around daily. He's probably used to news choppers looking for a good shot. Notice that all the heavy munitions are hidden inside the body of a normal-looking huey. I don't think he expected that.

I'm digging it. I'm one of the world's biggest Iron Man geeks, and I could pick this thing apart... but I get this very cool sense of dread from the trailer. Mandarin should be a dead-serious villain, even if he is, as one Iron Man forum poster put it, an "evil mad scientist kung-fu grandmaster with all the power of a horde of dragons at his fingertips". Kingsley ain't Chinese, but in the few scenes I see him, he does give off the distinguished, arrogant vibe that should be one of the Mandarin's hallmarks.

Love that shot of his rings, too!

It makes me wonder if the suit is 'protecting' her, like her Rescue armor in the comics. It grabs and envelops her to protect her.

I do believe that was the 'Iron Patriot' suit pinching her, so I'll go with standard kidnapping/bait plot.

It looks like Tony's house is starting to slide off the cliff with the first hit, which knocks him and Pepper off their feet, by the time it's finished he's all suited up. Even with some of the fast changes he's pulled in the film (suitcase suit, Mk VII) that's impressive.

Am I alone in thinking the Mandarin's rings looked way too big and more than a bit goofy?

It looks pretty damn interesting overall, though from this so far, one o the things I want to see (Pepper getting her own armor as a gift from Tony) would only occur towards the very end.

No blue on the suit. The coloration looked like the suit Tony wears in the rest of the trailer.

I, as some of you know, am an unabashed Iron Man fan, collector and fanboy, so this franchise has been absolutely tits for me.

It looks as if they are working an 'extremeis', Iron Patriot/War Machine and Mandarin angle all into one.

Yeah, there's definitely a few ways that scene could turn out. Jarvis taking control, the Rescue suit, Savin stealing it (though IM2 established that Tony has fail safes in places to stop that), so on. I personally would love for it to be a semi-autonomous suit, as we know that Tony has the AI tech required to make one. That could play into the part of the blurb on Youtube: "does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?".

Definitely an interesting trailer. It'll be interesting to see if they can juggle the humor and drama correctly.

A point: it's been rumored that Iron Patriot is just a repainted War Machine. That would make sense to me (especially after War Machine terrorized the crowds of the science fair). However, that leaves questions as to Savin's role.

EDIT: 0:59 shows the suit looming over Tony.

That's looking more like a stolen suit to me, but the lighting doesn't match up with the scene previous, as Pepper was grabbed in the middle of the night.

The armor/Jarvis has come 'alive' due to XYZ from New York in The Avengers, a take on the recent "extremis" story line. The armor isn't alive, but clearly is reacting to Tony's conscious (glove flying to his hand) and subconscious (full armor grabbing Pepper in bed) thoughts. She is clearly trying to wake Tony up from sleep, as if he were having a bad dream, when the armor grabs her.
It also is shown on top of Tony.

The Mandarin is there which is taken from the early depths of Iron Man lore. They should have got an Asian guy, but Kingsley is P. cool in my book so I can let it slide.

The War Machine/Iron Patriot angle is a conglomeration of the very good Rhodey story line (from when he first dawns the armor through the War Machine comics), and decent, if contrived, Osbourne Iron Patriot slant which while interesting, never in a million years would happen, even in comic book land.

The mix of eras they have drawn on is cool, but, like Spider-Man 3, it may be too much.

They haven't really established the Mandarin as an entity on his own in basically 3 previous movies leading up to now. Fanboys like me get all the little hinds and drops, but the general public doesn't. I'm interested to see how they introduce him without bogging the movie down with supposition and flashbacks.

Regardless, I am giddy with excitement.

All good points, Hav. After reading your post and rewatching the trailer, the suit reacting to Tony seems to ring true.

As for the Spider-Man 3 comparison, at the very least IM3 has RDJ to carry it if the writing does suffer. Of course, no acting can redeem a horrible story, but I'd much rather watch a mess with Downey Jr. in it than Babyface Maguire. As long as Stark doesn't dance down a street with an emo haircut, the movie is automatically better.

See, In-Universe, this is a great marketing ploy by the Air Force as it capitalizes on the new found fame of Captain America. Also, in the political world, 'Iron Patriot' is going to come off much better than 'War Machine'. We'll see if they actually use a name at all though.

It's hard to even tell what that blob of tattoo is, but I don't recall the Mandarin having anything distinguishing like that in the old versions. I'm not as up on the new versions though.

In fairness, you can easily make an argument for Iron Man, in particular, being far more science-fiction oriented than most comics.
