The snow monsters look absurd. After the mostly shitty episodes we've had so far this season I'm not very optimistic, but I'll probably give it a chance. But the only episode I'm really looking forward to is Gaiman's.

Sorry for the double post, but there's one more thing I want to add. Apparently the TARDIS has a new design.

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2012-12- ... dis-design

Edit to include some of the article:
Paul Jones
12:29 PM, 08 December 2012
"On Christmas Day, the Doctor will usher you into a brand new world," Steven Moffat tells us. And he's not just talking about the Time Lord's new companion, Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman), or the Christmas special's Victorian setting, complete with deadly sharp-toothed Snowmen.

"[There's] a brand new Tardis," announces Moffat in the Christmas double issue of Radio Times magazine. "Same old police box, of course, but when you open those magic blue doors..."

The Doctor Who showrunner is loathe to reveal too much more about the makeover, but we do have a first look at a detail from the new design.

The lighting unit from above the Tardis console is adorned with symbols from the Time Lords' Gallifreyan "alphabet" and is a darker, more serious-looking proposition to its predecessors (perhaps in keeping with the Time Lord's post-Pond mood at the start of the Christmas episode) with a hint of early Tardis designs.

Forgive me if I sound like a jackass, having not really followed this latest series, but why is the Doctor heartbroken and "retired?"

Its probably because Spoiler
Rory and Amy ended up getting stuck in New York in the 1930s or something so he'll never see them again, thanks to Weeping Angels
(as I recall that episode sucked). He's been quite dark, depressed, and self-loathing for a while though. At least since last season.

Edited to label the spoiler.

Soooo. Didn't Strax die? Was that not a thing now? That said, I'll happily watch a series of 5 minute shorts about him attempting to invade the moon. I imagine he would be like a more bloodthirsty version of Plasmo.

Agreed. Victorian era companion offers some hope but mostly, meh. New tardis looks kind of pretty though. What I can see of it anyway.

Was Strax the Sontaran in A Good Man Goes to War? If so, then he did die. But since this is Doctor Who, it could be Strax from earlier in his life.

a plot hole was filled with quicksand. No really - Amy wrote a book about the episode that included 'and that was the last time he saw her' or some such in it. Collapse of waveform, Doc won't risk paradox. the end.

Ex-fucking-actly.

After dosing heavily on Classic Doctor Who, so much of the charm of the show is the low budget look.

Based on that, I dislike the new TARDIS interior. It looks like a Star Trek warp core.

From what I gather, the TARDIS could look different everyday.

Well if they made proper AMERICAN 26 Episode seasons instead of this 13 episode nonsense, they wouldn't be bored now would they. :P

I must admit, I find the snowmen charming and a homage to the corny effects from the classic series.

Based on this picture, I think I like this one better than the other two. It's closer to the classic look, with a tidy console and no weird organic shapes, so far as I can tell. I do wish it had a simple roundel pattern without the hexagons, as well as the massive internal doors.

There's still plenty of weak writing in older episodes and contrivance of drama from very flimsy material but when it worked it was upon strength of acting alone. The new series tries to gloss over the weak bits with special effects, shouting and loud music.

If they want to look to prior runs for inspiration, this is the stuff right here.

I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone claim the old series had good acting before. Maybe you've never seen it? Heaps of it was fucking ropeable.

Not to long ago I rewatched The Daleks. To me "bad acting" sometimes comes across as much more natural than polished, perfect delivery. Ian and Barbara seemed more like real people with their occasional stammering or little flub than Amy or Rose.

Well at least the rotor doesn't have what looked like anal beads anymore.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Since people will flat out say the like something simply because it's like a 30 year old show, it makes sense for them to do this. Cheap, too.
