Minor 40k question
I picked up the Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium! omnibus on the recommendation of a friend. I'm just wondering if anybody knows if there's an official pronunciation for his first name (I've been pronouncing it see-A-fas).

The Vortex Empire: I think the real question is obviously how a supervolcano eruption wiping out vast swathes of the country would affect the 2016 election.
Borgholio: The GOP would blame Obama and use the subsequent nuclear winter to debunk global warming.

Re: Minor 40k question
It's 40k. Everything's official. Personally I go with Sye-a-phas, though some folks like to the biblical route and pronounce it Kai-a-phas. However you pronounce it, you'll soon find that it's a unconventional spelling of E. Blackadder.
Many thanks! These darned computers always screw me up. I calculated my first death-toll using a hand-cranked adding machine (we actually calculated the average mortality in each city block individually). Ah, those were the days.

Re: Minor 40k question
I think the author specified it was Kai-a-phas.

Re: Minor 40k question
According to the UK translations I read, it's more often pronounced Harry Flashman, VC, although thankfully Ciaphas is a much better person than Flashman. Jurgen is definately pronounced Baldrick though! However you pronounce it, you'll soon find that it's a unconventional spelling of E. Blackadder.
I think it's meant to be Kai-aph-as, as per the others, especially as it gets a bit more alliterative with his surname.

Yep, if I recall right there was even a phoentic description of his name in one of the novels.Srelex wrote:I think the author specified it was Kai-a-phas.
Besides which, there's added alliterative appeal to Commissar Ciaphas Cain.

Kai-a-fas. His nickname is "Kai". Also, it's a Stan Lee name this way.

Re: Minor 40k question
Did you read the authors introduction to the very book you're reading? I mean I have my copy right here, and on page 10, it says (and I qoute):StarSword wrote:I picked up the Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium! omnibus on the recommendation of a friend. I'm just wondering if anybody knows if there's an official pronunciation for his first name (I've been pronouncing it see-A-fas).
"Which brings me to the other question I'm most frequently asked about Cain - other then how do you pronounce his Christian name (For the record, it's kai-a-fass, which, like his surname, is a rather self-indulgent biblical joke)."
Because that does kind answer your question
This odyssey, this, exodus. Do we journey toward the promised land, or into the valley of the kings? Three decades ago I envisioned a new future for our species, and now that we are on the brink of realizing my dream, I feel only solitude, and regret. Has my entire life's work been a fool's crusade? Have I led my people into this desert, only to die?

Wait.. Blackadder and Baldrick..
Are Cain and Jurgen a reference to Blackadder that somehow everyone (except me) always knew about?

It's been noted quite a few times that Cain was patterned after some other famous fictional British characters.Cykeisme wrote:Wait.. Blackadder and Baldrick..

Re: Minor 40k question
What is this thing, can people not enjoy or get a good parody anymore.... (Gone through the first omnibus and read some that have come out since than, than left the omnibus in the work break room, where it's now being read by a waiter who wants MORE)

I think it's less that and more of Cyke just noticing it now .The Yosemite Bear wrote:What is this thing, can people not enjoy or get a good parody anymore.... Re: Minor 40k question
Yes, that's precisely what I meant.
Or, put another way, it's not that I can't enjoy a good parody.. it's that I only just started enjoying it

It's also pronounce Kai-a-fass in the audio drama, Dead in the Water.
