Big news regarding Doctor Who's 50th. anniversary.

Post by The Romulan Republic »

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-o ... th-1228442

Some of the article:
Show boss Steven Moffat is close to completing a script which will see the current Doctor, Matt Smith, needing the assistance of ALL his police box predecessors – even if three of them have died.

The half-century special, to be broadcast in November, will use studio trickery to resurrect the first three Doctors – William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee – in brief flashback scenes.

Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann have all signed up to record an anniversary audio adventure, and are keen to appear in the historic TV show, too.

Christopher Eccleston is said to be reconsidering an earlier decision not to take part, and David Tennant – a friend of Moffat – has hinted that he has been invited to reprise his role.

The final key to the special was Eccleston, who had previously said that he had no plans to return to the role but recently conceded he believed he “still had more to do with the character”. But companions such as Birmingham’s Arthur Darvill (Rory), Karen Gillan (Amy Pond), Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) and Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones) have all indicated that they are not involved.

There may, however, be a role for Alex Kingston, who plays the Doctor’s wife and who may be responsible for bringing all the previous incarnations together – against the Time Lord’s wishes.

Both Matt Smith and David Tennant are tight-lipped about the adventure.

“We’re as much in the dark as the majority of other people,” says Smith. “I haven’t seen the script so I have no idea what is happening. One thing’s for sure, we’ll make it the biggest in the show’s history.”

Tennant, interviewed on a radio show, claimed that he had yet to be invited – but gave the presenter a knowing wink.

It will not be the first time that previous Doctors have been gathered together. The 10th anniversary in 1973 was celebrated by The Three Doctors, starring Pertwee and Troughton, with film of Hartnell on a computer screen.

Doctor Who
The 20th anniversary was marked by The Five Doctors, with Davison, Troughton and Pertwee joined by Hartnell lookalike Richard Hurndall, with film footage of Tom Baker, who had declined to take part.

The 30th anniversary – after the series had been axed – was celebrated with a bizarre charity crossover, which found McCoy, Pertwee, Tom Baker, Davison and Colin Baker in an episode of EastEnders.

The show was not on air when the 40th anniversary rolled round but an audiotape adventure starred McGann, Colin Baker, McCoy and Davison with additional archive recordings of Pertwee.

Fiftieth anniversary writer Moffatt says: “You can’t please everybody but you don’t want anybody to feel let down by a big anniversary episode.”

The 50th birthday will also be marked by a drama documentary about the character and the early years of the show.”

The Surgery

1. William Hartnell (1963-1966)

2. Patrick Troughton (1966-1969)

3. Jon Pertwee (1970-1974)

4. Tom Baker (1974-1981)

5. Peter Davison (1981-1984)

6. Colin Baker (1984-1986)

7. Sylvester McCoy (1987-1989 & 1996)

8. Paul McGann (1996)

9. Christopher Eccleston (2005)

10. David Tennant (2005-2010)

11. Matt Smith (2010-present)
I have no idea how credible a source the Birmingham Mail is, but this seems to be more than just a rumour. The big surprise (other than the fact its happening, which given past multi-doctor episodes shouldn't be very surprising) is that Eccleston might return, despite all previous insistence to the contrary.

I have little hope it will be good, since its being written by Steven Moffat, but I'll probably watch it just because its the 50th. anniversary and because it'll be a rare chance to see the ones who were before my time on TV.

I'll watch it but I have little hopes for it's quality, especially if all eleven are being shoehorned in just because it's the anniversary. The Three Doctors and the Five Doctors suffered horribly from that, although the Two Doctors was a great improvement because it was just an ordinary story.

It will be interesting to see how they manage to resurrect Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee.

Sounds like 11's going to forrest gump his way through old stories. Also Sounds awful. I Bet 11 and River will prove to be behind many old doctor triumphs. Just because.

Despite everything he's done, I suspect Moffat has enough respect for the show not to do that. I hope so. They should honour the show for the anniversary, not belittle its past.

And isn't it only the first three who are said to be in flashbacks? And in their case there's a good reason: the actors are, sadly, deceased.

My biggest wish (besides it not sucking) is that McGann gets a fairly substantial role, since he never really had a chance to shine on TV. I doubt this will be the case though, because they won't have time to give most of them a big role and I suspect the biggest roles will go to Eccleston and Tenant due Tenant's popularity and familiarity with Moffat, and the need to offer Eccleston something good to get him to change his mind and return.

Yeah, let's highlight River Song even more. What could go wrong.

I don't think River was a bad character at first. But the River Song/Silence/Doctor's death story arc in season six gave us some of the worst episodes of Doctor Who.

The Silence idea itself wasn't that bad, they just didn't carry it out very well.

Crazedwraith's fear actually already happened in a novel.

I don't even understand the artistic intent. Beyond 'fanservice', what's the point? Yet more retcons on when time travel is and is not possible? More elevating the current stuff over the previous stuff? Retroactively making the old show a part of the new show directly?

Frankly I hope Eccleston stays away so we can point and laugh.

Stark: I presume the point is partly to honour the franchise. And there's a tradition of celebrating anniversaries like this, so a lot of people would probably be disappointed if it didn't happen. I also suspect this is going to involve the Silence arc and the Question, "Doctor Who?", in which case it seems fitting that all the Doctors should play a role, because its about what defines the Doctor. Plus its a chance to see the old actors return, and it would be great to see how the Doctors interact with each other.

But weather Moffat can still write an episode that doesn't suck is dubious. And it should be a multi-part story, because having them all in one episode means their won't be time to give them all big roles.

Edited.

Now that's a thing. Moffat said no more multi-parters. Although he should break it for the 50th anniversary special.

And the other part is because, as fanservicey as the concept may sound, Multi-Doctor stories actually tend to be pretty popular with the general viewing audience. The Three Doctors I believe got the highest viewing figures of Jon Pertwee's run, The Five Doctors was the best-selling Classic Series story on both VHS and DVD, and even the utter clusterfuck that was Dimensions in Time got better viewing figures than all but a small handful of Doctor Who stories.

To be fair, The Three Doctors did expand the series' mythos in addition to celebrating ten years of the show being on the air. But after that, The Five Doctors was pretty much just made because everyone expected them to do it (and they added in more Rassilon nonsense because The Deadly Assassin was popular), then during filming of that story Troughton said "You know, we should really do this more often" to JNT, leading to The Two Doctors. And Dimensions in Time was such a hastily written and shot mess that apparently none of the roles other than the Seventh Doctor and Ace were even specified in the script; they just wrote a bunch of generic lines so that whichever actors happened to show up could spit them out.
Now that's a thing. Moffat said no more multi-parters. Although he should break it for the 50th anniversary special.
Or they could just make it longer than usual. It wouldn't surprise me if the Beeb allowed for a 90-minute story, or maybe even two hours at a stretch.

There's a tradition of all the Integer Doctor stories being HORRID as well. 'Pick the worst numeral story' is such a hard game because they're all so balls.
Plus its a chance to see the old actors return, and it would be great to see how the Doctors interact with each other.
Oh, it IS fanservice. Glad we cleared that up.

Did noone notice how much of a complete clusterfuck the last attempt to literally cram EVERYONE into a single two parter was ?

Now you intend to do that with 50 years worth of Doctor Who with actors that are dead, extremely old and/or time has not been kind.
Lets have a look shall we:
Tom Baker vs. Tom Baker

Peter Davidsonvs. Peter Davidson

Colin Baker vs. Colin Baker

Sylvestor McCoy vs. Sylvestor McCoy

Ironically, Tom Baker and Davidson might be able to pass off as their Doctors but the others are going to be horrible.
Using CGI bullshit to make them look younger is so hilariously wasteful or filling the screentime with bullshit like they tried with Time Crash
Although the saving grace is that Paul McGann will finally get his face in as the Doctor rather than the abortion of a movie.

Final Nail in the Coffin: River Song is going to magically be apart of this ensemble and unite the Doctors
My Response: Go fuck yourself and take that godawful bullshit character with you.

If you want to watch the old Doctors then get the OldWho and watch it because the only 'biggest' award it is going to get is FAIL.
This is going to be a fucking disaster.

When did anyone say River Song was going to unite the Doctors? And why is it implausible for her to be present?

Also, the old actors could be made to appear younger as you pointed out (and why is that bad?), or they could show up as a voice only, or something else.

Maybe next time you should read what your posting ?
There may, however, be a role for Alex Kingston, who plays the Doctor’s wife and who may be responsible for bringing all the previous incarnations together – against the Time Lord’s wishes.
Or maybe you just dont know who Alex Kingstonis ?

50 years of Doctor Who crammed into a single episode with 11 Doctors + Companion and River Song = Utter clusterfuck of insanity
River Song is a stupid character that got forced down the throats of the audience as being something so awesomely special to the Doctor via stupid forced drama. Hey, lets fuck over OldWho by magically writing River Song into their lives... so that it makes no sense that Tennant has no idea who she is when he first meets her.
Oh right, lets throw lots of bullshit at the audience to justify this further pandering to a character that dosent have any impact on the show beyond the writer wank behind her.

Almost all of the NuWho 'EPIC' episodes have ended up being garbage wether its the previous attempt to cram the screen with Companion wankfests or the Timelords and Daleks coming back again and again. Now you think they are going to crap gold by pulling this ?
Only way this would be good is if Sylvestor McCoy manipulates River Song into going on the trip to the library or Ace shows up and beats her to death with that baseball bat.

I somehow missed or forgot that bit about River's role. However, none of that is confirmed. You're jumping the gun.

There is also no proof that any of the pre-Tenant Doctors will find out about River. So you're jumping the gun about that too.

Nor do I think the episode will be good, and if you've read my previous posts you know that. I'm not arrogant enough to assume I know what the episode will be like based on a brief article full of vague claims written before the script is finished.

In fairness, Dimensions in Time was conceived of, written and shot in the space of about two weeks, and was only 20 minutes long. There was no way it was ever going to be anything other than a clusterfuck with that approach.

I think part of the reason why (for me at least) The Three Doctors worked relatively well compared to the latter multi-Doctor stories was because it they tried to make it a landmark story in more ways than just having the previous two Doctors show up, and because they were able to focus on the Second Doctor being the only additional one in the bulk of the action. The Two Doctors would probably have worked well for the same reason, if not for the fact that it got buttfucked with regard to pretty much everything except the extra Doctor and companion.

Unfortunately I have a feeling that what Moffat's going to make is essentially The Five Doctors Mk. II, in that the only real draw is hey, lots and lots of Doctors in one place!
The Romulan Republic wrote:Despite everything he's done, I suspect Moffat has enough respect for the show not to do that. I hope so. They should honour the show for the anniversary, not belittle its past.
I think Moffat has more respect for the show's past than some people give him credit for. Remember that Chris Chibnall wanted to retcon the Silurians as always having had human-like faces which they just wore masks over in their Classic Series appearances, but Moffat vetoed him and specified that the NuWho Silurians were a separate branch.

1. Some of the actors have aged quite a bit. With McCoy you might be able to patch things with make up - I thought Radagast the Brown from the Hobbit was a younger actor, until I heard him speak and I recognise it was McCoy. With the others, you are going to need CGI.

2. While fan service can help if done for the advancement of the story, fan service for the sake of fan service rarely ends up well. That being said the Three Doctors wasn't a bad story, because the Doctors each actually played crucial roles, even if Hartnell's role was limited. For example Pertwee explored Omega's antimatter universe, while Troughton had to tame the antimatter monster attacking UNIT HQ. Contrast with say the Two Doctors, where Troughton's Doctor seemed mainly there to be rescued by Colin Baker. The Five Doctor suffered from the fact that a lot of the Doctors didn't do that much, and what they did was all the same thing - getting from point A to point B. Such is the problem with cramming too many characters in a limited time frame.

Personally if you want fan service, just have the ex Doctors play bit part roles of totally different characters. It literally is too hard to cram so many important characters in such a limited time frame. Doctor Who isn't Game of Thrones or a Wuxia series, there just isn't enough storytelling time to do these characters justice.

3. Fuck River Song. And not in a good way. This has the potential of ruining things so bad its not even funny. Just have the adventures they are supposed to have in between episodes so we don't have to put up with her ever again. Except when we rewatch Silence in the Library, which actually was a good episode, and not because she sort of dies. Although that episode got even better now that I now detest the Mary Sueness of her character.

I think River was okay during season five (my favourite season of Doctor Who), before her botched story arc was a major part of the story. She wasn't one of my favourite characters, but I didn't mind her.

Once the River Song story arc really got going, though, it started to suck. She ended up as a rather unsympathetic character who's development and relationship with the Doctor was rushed and ended up seeming contrived and melodramatic. Let's Kill Hitler, in particular, sucked big time (as did The Angels Take Manhattan, though mainly for reasons unrelated to River).

River is merely symptomatic of the larger issue behind NuWho. The folks writing this stuff are fixated on the idea of playing up dramatic bullshit around the Doctor wether it be the emo whining that Tennant went through or the constant companion crushes. However, they had to find a way to further add drama by throwing in someone who knows the Doctors real name and obviously that person can ONLY be someone that is epic themselves.
Result: We make a character that exists soley to justify it's own existance by oozing 'cool' and attempts to make the character awesome.
Not to be undone: they further expand on this bullshit by throwing more dramatic bullshit into the blender with the backwards relationship - which ultimately falls apart when you take it from the 'nice idea' stage to writing it down and melding it into your existing arcs.
TADA: You dont have a character, you have a walking writer fanwanked mary sue that ends up screwing up any story she is in because they dont seem to have a fucking clue how to properly include her.

Now they are doing a fanservice episode which has been built up to from the with the fixation on the Doctors name / identity. I have no illusions the writers will use this situation to cram their own pet projects into the episode and all the messy baggage it comes with. The only question is how obnoxious they are going to be with it in an episode that is already going to be drowning from the complexity of putting 11 different personalities into a single episode.
