Elysium/After Earth Trailers
Seems like 2013 will be a good year for sci-fi fans. We have an Ender's Game movie in the fall, Oblivion, World War Z, even Pacific Rim. Oh, and those of us who geek out to comic books get Iron Man, Thor and Superman films.
Still no discussion for these two films?
Elysium is a Matt Damon/Jodie Foster movie directed by the guy who did District 9 and taking place ~150 years into the future, where the obscenely rich live in their luxurious space hotel, the titular Elysium, and everyone else is stuck on a polluted, overpopulated shithole of a planet. We have a senator (Foster) trying to enact harsher immigration laws, really keep the riff-raff out of orbit, while Damon plays a poor schlub who gets caught up in some sort of unspecified scheme to equalize things.
I like that the trailer gives away almost nothing of the movie, no scenes of Damon, no shocking revelations, just an allusion to an idea. Because of the director and premise, I'm pretty sure there's going to be no escaping the social commentary. As long as it's not too hamfisted, I don't really mind though.
I know less about After Earth. It stars Will Smith and his kid, and is directed by Shyamalan. A general and his son (the Smiths) are the only survivors of a starship crash on Earth. Abandoned by humanity for over a thousand years, Earth is more primordial jungle than anything. The general is too injured to leave the ship, so the kid has to hunt for food and a way off the rock. It seems there's a subplot about them fixing their relationship to.
After Earth comes out June 7th in the US, Elysium is set for August 9 but it's already been moved back twice. Anyone else thinking about seeing them?

Can anyone explain to me how Shyamalan keeps getting his movies funded?

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

Will Smith.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

He only does one movie every three or four years, it gives people time to recover from and forget previous flops, while looking back fondly on the Sixth Sense.

Re: Elysium/After Earth Trailers
Elysium, you mean? The one in the OP?
"So you want to live on a planet?"
"No. I think I'd find it a bit small and wierd."
"Aren't they dangerous? Don't they get hit by stuff?"

You see, it's attention spans like that, that allow Shyamalan's films to keep getting made!

Re: Elysium/After Earth Trailers
Oh I haven't, though I don't know how much there is to discuss at this point. It's going to be about social stratification and the rich living off the backs of the poor and quite literally removing Earth's resources for their own benefit. Umm, the title and name of the station is clearly based of the Eylsium Fields, AKA Ancient Greek Heaven?Admiral Valdemar wrote:Don't forget Neil Blomkamp's feature too.

Re: Elysium/After Earth Trailers
Isn't there also some Tom Cruise movie about futuristic humans coming back to an abandoned earth and finding it infested with poor people?
