Look I've heard there are no spaceship scifi things around these days.

PS those pistols used better in Yamato. :P

Semi-shared universe. Harlock was originally supposed to appear in the old Yamato series.

What next? Harlock in Galaxy Train 999? LOL!

Which story is the movie supposed to use, anyway? Being grim is all well and good but I think there are enough movies about stealing magic rings around ATM.

The Yamato has also appeared in the 999 Manga.

The setup is similar to the connection between the Transformers War for Cybertron games, the Exodus/Exile novels, and the Prime TV series.

... Thanks for telling me things I already know? Next time I'll just say 'no shit idiot' instead of confusing you.

Or is this just a way of saying 'nobody knows what Harlock story they're using'?

I remember watching a Captain Harlock series ages ago when I started getting into Anime via seeing a bunch of it put up on the Cartoon Network website for free, I remember liking it for the interesting blend of science fiction, piracy, and mythology. I also remember it being rather short which I thought was a pity because I found it interesting. I always menat to go back and watch it but never got around to it nor was I quite sure how extensive it was.

I've only seen his cameos, so I have no real idea what he's 'about'. I just know bland shit like 're-enacts Neibelungin' etc.

Since not even the Manga stays internally consistant in that shared universe, it's probably (upwards of 90%) most likely yet another NEW incarnation of the same primary characters, as the creator likes to re-write canon so often it resembles Marvel X-Men universe, I won't say anything about Tie ins with Yamoto, and Galaxy 999, time travel, and other weirdness.

Things that stay consistant:
1. Harlock & Esmerelda
2. the gonk chief engineer and the super hottie that Harlock loves, but doesn't love Harlock will have an Identical daughter soap opera aged. (Not usre if the blonde in the trailer is the mother or the daughter)
3. Rule of cool down to the swordpistols.
4. shoutouts to the other bits of the shared universe/other incarnations...

When we talk of continuity into Matsumoto's works, we have to consider one thing: according to him, time is circular, and the history of the universe shall always repeat itself with some differences. In two words: what continuity?
Now we just need to see what THIS Harlock does for which reasons, how he meets Daiba (if he meets him at all), how Tochiro became a spaceship, if Tochiro and Emeraldas had their daughter, and who is the enemy. From the trailer I bet on the Illumidas or a version of the Mechanoids.
