My fictional staship vs anything else

Post by Rathark »

Spearhawk is a starship featuring in my sort-of-completed novel. The Starship and the central AI share the same name, for why should a sentient being not identify with her own body? You don't call your brain "David" and your body "Stuart", do you? On second thoughts ... :?

Spearhawk is a lightly armed colonial freighter, constructed in 2901 as part of a massive colonial exodus to a newly terraformed planet in a system 6000 LY away. (She was one of thousands carried inside the collosal worldship Juno). She is 300 metres long and 60 metres wide. Her shape is mostly cylindrical, but with smooth, muscular bumps on her chromelike surface. Her prow end tapers to a fine point. She has a mass of 100,000 tons.

She is made of a complex artificial substance that is mostly carbon based. (It consists of quite a few light elements that may be susceptible to phaser chain reactions). Her 30cm reflective hull (when not shielded) can deflect light, heat and radiation to a certain extent. She finally meets her "maker" when 12 incredibly powerful dragons decide to make finish her off after her crashlanding. Their fiery exhalations average about 40 gigajoules per dragon, tens of thousands of degrees kelvin, with each dragon exhaling every 10 seconds (please don't ask me about their biology). The firestreams penetrate her hull, tearing through wall after wall. Corridors gush like the insides of flame-throwers. It takes roughly 2 minutes for Spearhawk to explode, but the dragons were simply accelerating the inevitible, for Spearhawk's quantum reactor was set to explode within 5 minutes (yes, the old "exploding reactor" thing, but it's all for the plot - and besides, I'll explain more later).

The crashlanding in question (due to some very convoluted circumstances) has her skidding on her belly into a granite wall at a speed of 150 m/s. Her nose penetrates 60 m into the wall, but that 60 m is then rapidly crushed accordion-like into 30 m.

Her hull also has the ability to "heal" itself. This is due to the billions of sensors, nanobots and "nerves" running through it. (No, this is not your usual "organic technology", this is an example of solid engineering with the complexity of organic life). A critical rend in the hull can be "stretched" closed within seconds.

Her multi-faceted energy shield, at full power, can deflect a maximum of 4 * (10^17) joules at one time - about 100 megatons. This applies to both electromagnetic radiation and kinetic energy. The shield is an extremely fine, massless mesh. The only things that could filter through the mesh without breaking it are gravitons and the psionic influence of truly godlike beings that can use higher dimensions as a medium.

Ideally, she can maintain this power level for 1000 years. Please excuse me, I don't have a calculator with me right now, but that's how much energy her quantum reactor can use within its lifetime. It is a limited means of tapping "zero point energy" - while the energy source itself is vast, the structure of the reactor can only handle so much energy without expensive refits (entropy, wear-and-tear still apply in the 30th century, only the scale has changed).

Spearhawk is not a warship in the strictest sense, otherwise she would have energy weapons in the megaton range. Instead, she has two medium cannons on the port and starboard. Each can fire 2 terawatt gamma-ray bursts twice per second, with a maximum range of 300,000 km. The cannons are light and maneuverable (not the case with stronger cannons), able to make a 150 degree turn in half a second. Their power and beam thickness is easily adjustable, and can be primed for either deep penetration of widespread destruction. Although useless against similarly sized warships, they come in quite handy against small fighters, battle droids, ground vehicles and troops with personal shields. They are also ideal for destroying large, unshielded, ground-based targets while causing minimal colateral damage.

The 2-terawatt gamma ray lasers can maintain continuous full-power beams for up to 30 seconds. Any longer could seriously damage the cannons themselves. Microscopic openings open up in the AI-contolled sheild for the finer beams - risky portals are needed for the broad beams.

To be continued ...[/b]

Sorry, I just realised that I can't edit in this forum.

Although not equipped with a missile launcher, Spearhawk can send and direct a single 1m spherical probe rigged with an illegal antimatter bomb. The bomb in question contains 200 grams of anti-neutronium, and thus can produce an explosion equivalent to 10 megatons (4 * 10^16 joules). The unique property of this form of explosive is that the anti-neitronium is stored within a protective shield - that is generated by mechanisms within the anti-neutronium itself. This ensures that the bomb can only go off when it is meant to, unless it recieves a direct hit. The probe has superhuman intelligence, can travel through atmosphere, and can accelerate to .01c in one minute. It can also cloak itself. (The probe is never used in the novel, but the bomb is  )

Spearhawk's vast central nervous system has a million times the mental speed of the average human. She has emotions that are well controlled. Her creativity is present but strangely supressed. By the latter half of the 3rd millenium, all AIs have special safety features to prevent their minds from wandering and - worst of all - collapsing into infinite closed loops in which they try to evaluate every impossible scenario. (AIs can consider almost every POSSIBLE scenario with the data they are given, but inevitably make mistakes when trying to predict the behaviour of humans they have no data on).

While her central nervous system usually can fully "re-centralize" itself elsewhere in her starship body within seconds after an accident, she is virtually knocked out for minutes after a surprise multi-gigawatt telekinetic outburst on her bridge. This is unprecedented in her experience (no-one has psionics that powerful in the Earth system circa 2900), especially because of the strange nature of human telekinetic activity and the unique "pulses" in sends through the fabric of space.

Her scanners can sense through 2 km of granite.

She is usually bound by a modified version of Asimov's 3 Laws of Robotics. Her 1st Law is: An AI must not harm a sentient being unless in defense of registered allies, or, through inaction, allow a sentient being to be harmed unless such inaction is necessary for the protection of registered allies.

How do you think she'll fare against any one (or more) of these potential adversaries?

1 standard tie fighter
1 X-wing fighter
1 AT-AT
Slave 1
1 Omega class destroyer
Enterprise-D
Enterprise-E
1 Shadow warship
1 ISD
Neelix in "happy happy sunshine" mode.

I think you've miscalculated

Post by Patrick Degan »

4.2E17 joules is equal to a one megaton nuclear warhead. The figure you're reaching for, I think, is 4.2E19J.

I'd also reconsider ZPE. So far, observational evidence does not support the hypothesis of limitless energy drawable from the vacuum at any given point in space. One ten-thousandth of a joule is about the best you could get. Certainly not enough to power your deflector shield.

Oh, I forgot ...

In the novel, Spearhawk's mind is SERIOUSLY weakened by a highly illegal docility virus planted by a borderline-insane human she trusted. This partially explains her vulnerability to the telekinetic outburst on her bridge, and also explains her inability to regulate the quantum reactor after her crashlanding, which explains why a few terajoules of energy leaked and cause the explosion (simply turning it off would have left her allies even more vulnerable - leaving it on actually gave them time to escape).

Her maximum power output is 400 thousand terawatts. In real space, she can accelerate at full power until her reactor wears out. She is one of the smallest starships of her era with warp bubble capability (using the negative energy method in a way only AIs understand), able to travel at a maximum of 100c. In emergencies, she can achieve a warp jump within 30 seconds, but only outside of an atmosphere. (This never happens in the novel, so I haven't given serious thought to the logistics).

She can cloak herself, but only if her shield is using 1% maximum power. She has antigrav (ideal for atmospheric missions), artificial gravity and inertial dampeners for maximum possible acceleration. (Thousands of Gs, but this doesn't happen ... see above).

You are welcome to point out any scientific implausibilities or contradictions I have made.

One ton = 4.2E9 joules
One megaton = 4.2E15 joules

Even if ZPE is impossible, it is perhaps no less plausible than psionic powers and 40-ton flying dragons with multi-gigajoule firestreams. I always refer to my novel as science fantasy, even if there are no transporters or phasers ... [/quote]

Hmm ISD pokes it and it dies
TIE does not have the Firepower to break through the shielding without at least half an hour of strifing runs

The X-Wing can salvo Torps take down the shield and carve it up at leasure

At-At providing it does not fly away could gun it down easly
Slave 1, Its faster much better armored and better shielded, that ship dies FAST

The Enterpises- A spread of Four Normal Photon Torps will kill your ship and both of those carry them

I'm glad to see it stands a chance against a Tie fighter. :)

What is the firepower of an AT-AT's main gun? These are ground assault weapons you're talking about.

BTW, it is essential to the plot that Spearhawk has vulnerabilities. Maybe I should introduce one of the REAL warships from the 30th century.

Or maybe from the Earth System 22,000 years later, when most of the series is set. (By then, human civilization is roughly around the "Galactic Empire" level, with billions of warships and the ability to ignite supernovas).

ERRRRR no it is not from I-War or Edge of Chaos :o !!! This is from my personnal space opera, Sky Ocean, set in 3 different era : 24th century ( the Independence war, in the game it is in the 23rd ), 28th century ( War of Relics ), 29th ( Great War )... No I don't think anything in that universe come close to my Olympus-class : heavy battlecruisers are about 1 km max and have about 10 guns pods...
But this might have fooled you : I took the principle of LDS ( Linear Displacement System, which becomes Light Distorsion System ) , the reactionless drive, and use it in my universe  ...

Precisions about the Doomgiver-class :

*as far as external observer can tell ( which is not easy considering the extreme efficiency of its sensor jammers ), they don't seem to use two different reactionless drives ( one manoeuvrable but with low accelerations - a few thousands "g", and another, the Light Distorsion System, capable of something like 15 000 km/s², but with little possibility of changing trajectories ) as all other evolved vessels, but rather one and only drive, enabling LDS-type accelerations and huge manoeuvrability - with little concern about orientation : when lesser vessels must - or should - temper with the position of their reactors, KDG can manoeuver in nearly any position. Only restriction : to use its Death Ray at good power it has either to stand still or lower its shields - for unexplained reasons. Last advantage, it is barely slowed by LDS-inhibitor missiles and fields, and it requires thousands of major capital warships to partially ensnare one single KDG with tractor beams.
*it is not a standard equipment, but certain KDG have been "seen" using phase cloaks ( trek-like, just a lot more sophisticated ), and even with standard cloak they can fire and have good precision and sensor readings - not optimal though, and since they apparently use their shielding array as cloaking emitter, shield efficiency is seriously lowered. The fact that Shadow* fleets constantly use phase cloak, while KDG do not, means in no way that their cloaking tech is superior to Ki'Dak one, simply that cloaking devices which remain efficient on a ship using a Subspace Rift as power source are extremely difficult to build, even for Ki'Dak.
*their hull and armor are composed of nucleonide, a material beyond mankind's 29th century science ( in fact beyond anyone's science in the Milky Way but the Ki'Dak's one ) , which resists almost any form of physical damage ( wether mecanical or energetic, a Ki'Dak warship once got through a planetoid at a significant fraction of the speed of light and escaped apparently unscathed, and another stayed several days within a sun-type star core ), and can be damaged only through two exotic forms of weapons : singularities ( which pass through any other material and detonate inside a ship which is not protected by its shields. Here it barely scratches the paint, and require huge bombings to do only minor damages ) and "quantum resonators" ( it's merely a nickname for the weapon, not a functionnal description. Anyway those toys attack matter at a molecular level and scatter it into dust, although impractical for large scale destructions - aka planet-killing - they're dreadful when used against an unshielded starship ).
*their only true weakness is that they have a single power core, unlike all other 29th century vessels ( in which each single turret has its own generator for combat efficiency which can be greatly improved through the use of auxiliary power generators ) : a Subspace Rift, very compact technological wonder which can power every single weapon or tactical system on the ship and keep engines and shields at optimal performances without any concern for fuel. Guess what, I didn't found a plausible way for my heroes to exploit it... yet ( but that's a minor concern ).
*only the Min Astari** or other mighty telepaths can try a Psionic assault on this ship, with very little hope for success - or survival.
*supernova mines are not standard issue, but they can be placed in huge minefields around star systems
*it is not know if the nova triggering array ( which can bypass most solar protective devices ) is standard issue, but this is highly plausible  ( in English : not decided yet 8) )

*nothing to do with B5, Shadow people were once human but through intensive genetic engineering and cybernetics they cannot interbreed with Earth humans anymore - which is not rare. As their name indicates, they have outstanding cloaking tech ( even the Ki'Dak have trouble with it ) which allows them to hide even entire star systems, and are secret, mysterious people.
**nothing to do with the Minbari, they're close to my Shadows in term of modification and secrecy degree, but have oustanding telepaths.

I've decided that, if I'm going to provide examples from my own fictional universe, it would be more interesting to go downscale rather than upscale, since most of the action takes place on an individual / small team scale.

One of the "heroes" of the novel is a dragon named Alokavon. Here are a few stats:

Species: Draconis Marsupialis Telkius (believed to be originally engineered by superintelligent AIs)

Sex: Male

Age: 24

Length: 20 m

Mass: 45 tons

IQ: Unknown, believed to be in the 135 - 145 range (above average for his speicies)

Knowledge: Has sound understanding of human psychology and culture (limited to the planet Telkia, a sophisticated, globalized world where psionic powers and crystals have replaced technology and space-travel has yet to be re-discovered). Also has knowledge of Dragon Corps miltary tactics, but has no formal training. (Dragons have a far higher aptitude for military tactics than humans, and require minimal training).

Shielding Ability: Can deflect up to 120 gigajoules of electromagnetic radiation or plasma (Aggressor must use a minimum of 30 gigawatts to penetrate at all). Can easily deflect a BLUNT stalagtite of up to 300 tons falling from an altitude of 200 m. A sufficiently sharp stalactite of half this mass may be able to penetrate his shield if dropped from the same altitude. Force and pressure would be a greater factor here than kinetic energy. Can also use this shield to resist most types of mental coercion.

Defense: Plasmic breath
Individual fireballs of up to 30 gigajoules each per second
Maximum fireblast of 60 gigawatts for 60 seconds. (May cause exhaustion afterwards).
Intense fireblast of 120 gigajoules for occassional 1 second bursts.
Psychokinetic shockwave of up to 60 gigawatts, 10 second duration every 20 seconds. Can be concentrated to cover 1 sqm at a distance of 10m, or expanded to cover a hemisphere expanding at the speed of sound. Cannot be used concurrent with any fireblasts more powerful than above-mentioned fireballs.
2 4-clawed sharpened foretalons with 1 MW of musclepower behind them (in brief violent bursts).
Same for hind talons and whiplash tail.
Bite has 4X force of Tyrannosaur.

Cloaking: Can make his entire body invisible to the naked eye of any human or dragon - infra red or UV - by means of bending rays around him. May be detected by sufficiently powerful psionic or technological scanner.

Speed: Can accelerate to MACH 1.5 within 10 seconds.

Levitation: Like most dragons, can totally negate his gravity weight for as long as he stays conscious and healthy.

Scanning: Can detect life-forms through 5km of granite, and can also assess the psionic power of those not trying to cloak their auras.

Other Ablities:
Can shield himself in his sleep.
Has a kangaroo-like pouch with a total capacity of 9 tons (empty)
Has hearing, vision and scent superior to any Earth animal.

Weaknesses: Loves admiring himself in any reflective surface.
Female dragons (BIG ones)
Food

Now how would this character fare against:

100 stormtroopers (rifles only)
100 T-800s with plasma rifles
A full US Army battallion
A squadron of Harriers
Yoda
A Balrog
Gandalf
Storm
Cyclops
Superman

I wish, I wish, I wish someone here had read Alan Dean Foster's Codgerspace, and would put the Autothor's ship up against, hell, *anything*.

Still, if we're comparing self-created ships, my first completed novel, Tanis, featured a single ship that could whoop most sci-fi's uber-warships and keep going. But, it was invulnerable. Even the characters in the story had to get rid of it by encasing it in a couple planet's worth of matter so that people couldn't get to it and use it. Such is the fun of creating your own stories. You can do that.

Well, sir, if you want the stats of the Naggarok, begin to fear. These things are used against enhanced 4th Empire Planetoids.

Dimensions: 70kilometers long, 40 kilometers wide, 20 kilometers tall.

Drive Systems: Beastial Inertialess Drive(First seen in HW: Cataclysm). Top speed several m/s below c. Can maneuver like top-end starfighter while at this, or any other, speed. Immune to acceleration and inertia.

Backup Ion Drive: Acceleration of 6000G's.

Fold Drive: Near instant interstellar folding.

Wormhole Drive: Near instant galactic/dimensional travel.

Defenses:

Multilayered(50 layers total) 4th Imperium Hypershielding, each layer rated at 1e40W.
Compressed Quantum Crystalline Armour, 5 kilometers thick at thickest point.
Beastial regeneration abilities.

Offensive grid:

'Metric Assload(Read, I'm too lazy to look up the real numbers, but they're numerous)' of turbolasers of all sizes.

50 Superlaser mounts, rated between 1e35 and 1e38J per shot.

50 Fleet Corrupters, which are superlasers which infect ships with Beastial plasma.

60 High Capacity Turbolasers. Basically, 8 gun mounts with nearly as much power as an Eclipse's superlaser.

10k Hypermissile ports, for use in long-range bombardment.

Of course, a clever person will notice it's -very- underdefended for her armanant in the STGOD universe. She's a battlecruiser, and a fast attack ship. Oh, and while your armour impresses me greatly, once shields are down, it's just time until one of these infects it.

Okay, super-duper-powerful ship is put back in the closet.
Manic Progressive: A liberal who violently swings from anger at politicos to despondency over them.
