Best dressed science fiction universe

Post by Zor »

Of all the science fiction universes you have seen and read about, which one do you think has the best fashions and clothes.

Two Special Rules...

1-Science Fiction universes which are set in the present day (relative to when they were made) and people dress normally don't count. This also includes works set 20 minutes into the future in which fashions have not noticeably changed and worlds which, regardless of time period people still dress in a manner identical to that of the contemporary world they come from.
2-This is best DRESSED, you can't bring up the way people dress (or rather, don't) in Barsoom in the Edgar Rice Burroughs series of books as the paragon of fashion.

The Fifth Element is great because it actually takes a look at how fashions change beyond the superficial clothing changes. Ruby Rhod is basically a gigantic billboard of effeminate gay stereotypes in our current fashions, from his dress to his speech and mannerisms and more. But in their society he's an example of a glorious icon of heterosexuality and manhood.

This is interesting because it reminds me of similar fashion changes from the past to the present.

There was a time in England when young members of the aristocracy would wear artificial beauty marks, elaborate ruffled garments, complex involuted hairstyles, stockings, often makeup... And that was the men.

if you called them effeminate because of all this, they would probably challenge you to a duel and carve you up like a roast with a sword.

Babylon 5 did some interesting things with the business suits worn by some human characters - something as simple as removing the lapels made them look different, but not completely ridiculous "space clothes".

I'm partial to the Antares uniform styles in Star Trek Online.

I have to go with Star Trek...Most of the Starfleet styles were cool, especially from the TOS-TNG era. It was in the DS9-VOY era that Starfleet's sense of fashion took a nosedive. The last cool uniform I liked was the TNG season 3-7, I was never a fan of the jumpsuits (with the exception of ENT) though they would be more realistic and practical than say the "monster maroon" of TOS.

The aliens of Trek were dressed badly much of the time, recurring races and aliens of the week alike. One of the worst showings of aliens of the week that popped into my head was the VOY episode "Time and Again", where everyone is pretty much dressed in the same 3 or four colors. But there were some really cool looking alien styles as well; Klingons always look cool, no matter what era. I also liked Cardassians. And the Hirogen are pretty badass looking.

My final word on Trek fashion is to share this article, a great recap of the original Star Trek's highs and lows.

You gotta be fucking kidding me. The one and only thing the TOS and early TNG era uniforms had going for them was the colour coding. The Motionless Picture uniforms were so ugly it hurt, it wasn't until the TWOK and on uniforms that the TOS movie suits looked practical or good. Other than my disdain for the uniformly purple shoulder pieces (I rather like the colour coding idea) the mid-to-late DS9 and on era uniforms were hopelessly superior to the TNG ones both visually and practically (or at least looked like they were). I don't know why they didn't carry over the colour-coded shoulder pieces from the earlier PJs, but other than that the purple shoulder suits looked both visually better and more believable as a duty uniform.
The really depressing thing is that the most practical looking uniform are the ENT jumpsuits...

In no particular order:
Tron
Dune
Riddick
5th Element
Doctor Who
Star Wars

In those you actually see more than just military, you see royalty and regular people, workers and administration, high class and low class. government and civilian.

It's pretty much like 18th century European aristocracy fashion but even more cheesy.

Yeah, Moebius designed some very crazy stuff for an European Dune movie that could have been made in the 1970's:

The Sting movie and the other series. Pretty much all the Dune stuff I have seen. I remember it being vivid when they aren't all out worm surfing and yelling bullets at each other, but maybe I'm wrong.

Babylon 5 had some pretty nifty outfits and clothing that could reasonably be seen as continuation of current trends. Star Wars has as well a wide range of clothing for different cultures and species and different level of society. Some of them aren't practical in any way or form - but many of our current clothing might not be practical, either, but are worn for ceremonial purposes.

I haven't seen much of Star Trek, so I can't comment on it besides some superficial things. The pajama look of their Starfleet uniforms irritate me for some reason.

They fixed the pajamas in season 3 or 4 IIRC. Star Trek was OK, but it showed much more of the military uniforms than anything else.

I quite liked the movie-era Trek uniforms with the padded jackets, and the DS9-style ones were OK. The civilian clothing was almost universally dreadful, though.

While the Fifth Element wins my vote for Best Dressed, I'd like to give a nod to Ripley's sneakers and the corporate business suits designed for Aliens. They may have been done on a budget to save money for elsewhere, but I think it shows a nice gradual design trend in fashion over time, while reflecting on the grungy decadent atmosphere.

Surprised nobody mentioned some of the costumes from Stargate (either the movie or the series).

The Goa'uld could be quite outlandish.

My vote is for Firefly/Serenity as best dressed. I love how they combine the old west space faring race of humans with high levels of eastern influence.

I'm with fgalkin. I love the heights of ridiculousness reached by the techno-fetishistic take on Age of Sail/Victorian dress in Warhammer 40K. Like these ladies.
