What sci-fi animation French children watched during the 80s

Post by Zor »

Here is it's theme.

It is called Les Mondes Engloutis (The Engulfed World).

At a long time ago, a great civilization existed on the surface of the Earth. Until a great disaster happened which destroyed it. A few of it's survivors were dropped into the middle of the earth. There said survivors (which don't have any feet or legs, but rather have a single rounded mass under their torsos and hover slightly above the ground) built a city called Arkadia upon a disk around a large artificial sun called Shagma. There this civilization existed for thousands of years in peace. Until some kids found out that the sun was dying so they created a female golem named Arkana to go to the surface on board a living aircraft called Shagshag to go to the surface through the various strata between the Earth's Center and it's surface along with two critters called Bic and Bac. Going up she picks up a slave gladiator named Spartakus and once they get to the surface they pick up two kids (a teenager named Bob and his little sister Rebecca) before returning to the city to try to fix things. As they go back down through the various startum, they are menaced by a bunch of Punk Rock pirates.

This show is weird.

You had me interested right up until pirates. Just seems a stretch too far. :|

Writers get away with a lot of stuff by labeling it as 'for kids'.
Anyways, old anime hurts my eyes.

This was broadcast in the US as well, on Nik if I remember correctly. I thought it was weird as a kid but I watched it anyway as it was different.

There was an English Dubbed version called Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea.

During the 70's and the 80's there was a fairly large Sci-Fi "uprising" as it where in France.

A lot of scifi fantasy books were written and later turned into movies.
Two of my favorite animated French films are the following:

The first movie he produced was "Fantastic Planet"
A movie based on a 1953 French novel Oms en série. The story is set in the far future, where the remnants of Humanity have become "Pets" to a race of Giants on a world where Humans are the size of dolls, and everything around them is hostile and dangerous. The story follows the life of "Terr" who, through an accident, becomes "educated" in the ways of his masters. Knowing their science, language, and culture, he goes off in search of the "Wild" humans to teach them as well. The story of the movie is rather straight forward. But the Visualizes are incredibly stunning and surreal. Bizzare creatures that defy explanation crop up at all times, and even just walking across the planets surface is filled with unworldly backgrounds.

The second movie was produced a few years later, and this time, help animating it came from French comic genius Jean Giraud, Also known as Mœbius. The second movie, titled " The Masters of Time" was less well known and had a more traditional animation style . The story follows a young boy who is trapped on a desert world after his parents are killed by bug like creatures. The only help is more then a month away, but the boy has a special newly developed radio that allows him to communicate instantly with his rescuers despite being lightyears away. Along the way they pick up an old man who is friends with the ship captain and seems to know a great deal about the planet the boy is trapped. He says he spent time on it, but doesn't really remember when. Throughout the movie the old man saves the life of the boy several times by giving vital information about dangerous parts.
The ending to the movie is a wonderful plot twist that I shall not spoil, but Invite others to watch.

I actually remember some bits of this that sometimes went on Cartoon Network. I was less than ten and it was pretty weird. I only remember that the guy had a crossbow mounted on his hand and the ship. The ship was shaped like a dome, floated and talked by a glowing bit that was its head.

There are probably a wealth of awesome and weird stuff through the language barrier.
Credo!

Ulysses 31 would also come to mind but that's because I grew up in Australia where it was in regular rotation in the 80s on the government broadcaster (also called ABC). Looks like it didn't really get much of a US release.

It has one of the more catchy theme songs and from a recent re-watch of a few episodes has aged reasonably well IMHO. The translation to English is a bit rough in some places (e.g. the frequent repetition of "Telemachus, my son!") but otherwise it's fun even if it contains both children and robots.

OK - I'm clearly missing some BBCode to embed the video; I keep getting told I can't use [flash][/flash] per the instructions from this page http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=128938. Any pointers are welcome :)

Ulysses 31 looks like it could be the greatest cartoon series ever made, or a honking pile of shit. Can anyone confirm which one it was?

Ulysses 31 was awesome !!!

I watched it with my friend a few years ago for the first time and the first few episodes were childish but as it progressed it got darker and more " adulty" :?

I thought it was awesome if slightly weird when I was a kid, but as an adult I found it hadn't aged very well.

I was kind of young when it was on here, but I remember this one episode that blew little me away where they gank the episode's "monster" (a minotaur ripoff if I remember correctly) and then find out that it was he, not some other person he was holding prisoner, who they had been told was in the maze and knew the way back to Earth. Ice burn!
