So, from what I've gathered, the space programs die when something happens to Earth only to have a wormhole open right above the planet.

Physicist Kip Thorne is supposed to be a scientific adviser.

I think it was more that the space programs have largely withered and died already, for lack of interest.

All I have to add it that Nolan worked on the script with his brother and they're being very careful with released information. A team of astronauts is sent into a mysterious wormhole that forms over earth. Full stop.
