Transcendence trailers just released

Post by cosmicalstorm »

As a semi-singularitard I'm looking forward to this movie with both fascination and dread. Zee evil computers.

Given that it's directed by Christopher Nolan's go-to DP, it will be one of the most ugly-looking movies of next year. Seriously. Pfister is pretty bad.

Can you define what constitutes 'ugly' in a film? I admit I've only seen the Dark Knight trilogy, in which he was DP, and to me personally there's nothing ugly about them.

Consider me interested- it certainly has an impressive cast, and I'm a sucker for these kind of stories (what it is to be human, machines gaining sentience, etc) so it'll be on my list of the many, many films I intend to see next year.

There's no balance to his shots. They are amateur at best. His action work is boring as well. Look at Batman Begins and the fight on the ice near the beginning. It's difficult to follow and he's not even employing much shaky cam! He doesn't have much pop. It's telling when his best work is from 2002 (Insomnia) and that was mostly because Alaska is beautiful!

Fair enough- that's your opinion. Personally I don't recall having trouble following the action in the films (with the exception of the scene where Batman takes down the goons at the docks, that was pretty underwhelming).

Full trailer. Looks dumb, but I take back what I said. There's some good looking stuff here.

So it looks like Lawnmower Man 2.0
Someone gets uploaded into digital form and suddenly they have super magical powers and manipulation over matter.

Yeah, I'm not impressed. Between the "The luddites were right!" angle that I hate so, so much, the likely nonsense about uploading as opposed to a copy running in an emulator, and the magic powers, this isn't a movie I'm interested in seeing.

No film or tv producers seem interested in dealing with the potential weirdness of a real post-Singularity world because questioning cliched narratives about human cognition and social orders just isn't done. Partly for trite ideological or crass commercial reasons, and partly because, I think, film just isn't a good medium for dealing with more than one aspect at a time in a halfway decent way. A television series could do it, but I don't see a team of gifted writers well versed in the sciences and concepts associated with the Singularity coming together with substantial funding any time soon.

Are we sure it will be a "Luddites were right" story after all?

Well lets take a look at what the Trailer promises...

"We can download someones mind into a Computer!"
"NOOO! Don't do it! Man was not meant to meddle in such things!"
"Well we did it anyway... ARGGG!! The man has suddenly gained super powers and will take over the World! What has Science DONE!!"

Am I rite?

I think one of the points that comes across pretty strongly is that they DON'T upload the man into the computer. They can never tell how much of him made it in there which basically changes the personality completly or if what did actually uploads in any way translates into that personality once its in that medium.

The amount of jump cuts in the action sequences really detract from his work in my opinion. This scene is a good example of what I mean. There are some multiple times in that scene where the shot changes at a rate faster than once per second. That's just annoying for me.

They tried, that's the story and there's dissension with the 'cliche grief stricken woman' denying that he's an abomination and her male colleagues warning that he ain't right.

They can never tell how much of him made it in there which basically changes the personality completly or if what did actually uploads in any way translates into that personality once its in that medium.
A character warns as much "if one childhood memory is missed..."

My Spidey sense tells me that the movie ends when at the darkest hour the 'cliche grief stricken woman' reaches what byte of humanity remains and gets SkyNerd to shutdown.

Or tearfully hits 'delete,' letting her husband go and realizing that no one should ever mess around with what makes a man human ever again.

But yes, this looks like Destructive Uploading, or the attempt at least.

Yeah. One of the funniest/saddest quotes I've ever read (in the sense of not having a shred of self-awareness) was this:

"I thought 'The Avengers' was an appalling film. They’d shoot from some odd angle and I'd think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling."
I don't like being a bastard, but they leave me no choice.
