linkAsked what’s next for the “Transformers ” franchise literally a few hours after he finished “Transformers: Age of Exctinction,” Michael Bay quipped half-seriously, “there’s a lot that’s unexplored, but that’s for the next director to figure out.” He added “they’re hard movies to do and it takes every day for two years. They’re fun, but they’re hard.” Bay has talked about a potential handoff in the past, saying he’d oversee a new cast and some pre-production, and then split. But it seems he meant it this time.
In an interview with USA Today, the paper says the filmmaker “believes he will pass the baton for future Transformer movies to a new director while he turns his focus elsewhere.”
"There's kind of a new chapter, a new direction in movies I want to make," Bay said. "I have a lot of stories to tell. And it's about flexing new muscles." One of those directions is a passion project, a documentary regarding elephant poaching which the filmmaker has discussed in the past.
Should this come to pass, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. One could argue that, through his Platinum Dunes production shingle, Bay has already handed off projects to some of his younger protégés, like Jonathan Liebesman, director of this weekend's box office champ “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (which did so well at the box-office a sequel is already on the way).
“Transformers: Age of Exctinction,” is the highest grossing film of 2014 worldwide and will likely remain so for the rest of the year. The movie is also the 9th highest grossing picture of all time worldwide. Domestically, it’s the third highest grossing film of the year and may very well make it to #1. Bay has conquered blockbuster filmmaking and thus has nowhere to go in the genre, so perhaps he has a sincere desire to test his mettle in other cinematic arenas.
End of an era? Do you care? Are you happy to see Bay take on more “Pain & Gain”-esque non-Transformer

It may ease some of the more painful Bayisms. Like the rampant objectification of women, horribly racist stereotypes, insanely enthusiastic fellatio of the US military, and explosions so explosiony that they somehow manage to make explosions boring. Fingers crossed.LadyTevar wrote:..........

But will it get rid of the single largest and most important problem with the movies? You know, the fact that movie after movie about transformers had less to do with the actual robots than obnoxious human characters.Chimaera wrote:It may ease some of the more painful Bayisms. The first transformers movie was a masterpieca and it had the 3 things that make a movie great :
-hot girls
-robots
-EXPLOSIONS

Re: Transformer 5 will not be Bay
Actually, that's a good point. It would be incredibly refreshing just to see a movie set entirely or mostly on Cybertron. Or even a movie following Prime on his own, following on from his apparent transformation (hah!) into Superman at the end of AoE. Might make for a slightly smaller scale, but still intense movie as he goes on the hunt for the creators of the Transformers. I dunno. It's an idea.Purple wrote:But will it get rid of the single largest and most important problem with the movies? Because you think it's not broken out of ignorance. Imagine for a moment a movie where all the meaningless human characters have been stripped out leaving only the hot girls. Next, fill the space that's now left with even more hot girls, robots and explosions. Sound good to you?Tandrax218 wrote:damn

Bay has had 4 movies to build a world in. Four movies. What he's built is absolutely rubbish with more human characters on the roster than Transformers. Bay has gleefully killed off or disappeared almost every actual transformer brought in. I know it's not a huge problem to bring in more, there's certainly a roster but restarting it would just work better. Throw out the current, twisted continuity and do a new one based off of an existing one. Every TF fan knows there's already too many continuities without Bay created another one.
I don't want to see Transformers 5: More Milking, I want to see a film called Transformers: Robots in Disguise, or Prime, or Generations... I don't care. Just make the film about the robots and their ongoing conflict.

Re: Transformer 5 will not be Bay
It would need a complete reboot - go back and basically do an updates retelling/reinterpretation of the G1 storyline. Start with a horrible near-defeat of the Autobots on Cybertron and the subsequent narrow escape and chase that ends in the Arc crashing on a prehistoric Earth. Fast-forward to the modern day and take it from there. Have the humans be mere witnesses to the initial emergence of the Transformers...
Oh... and have them be boxy and a little awkward in their robot forms. Have them use their altmodes more while fighting, and introduce more of the non-automobile Autobots, like Springer, (a personal fave), and I wanna see frikkin' Omega Supreme!

Thing is to me. If you're going to live action Transformers. It almost has to have significant human characters. Perhaps not to the level of the Bay films but they need to be meaningfully there. If you're going to do a film that's entire about the CGI characters you might as well go and make it a fully animated film.

Re: Transformer 5 will not be Bay
Honestly I think they should draw inspiration from the Japanese monster movie genre. You know, Ultramen, Godzilla and that sort of stuff. They have a great record of having a cast of human characters who are just meaningful enough to connect to and root for whilst at the same time not letting it turn into a human centric story.Crazedwraith wrote:Thing is to me. Re: Transformer 5 will not be Bay
This cannot be bad news. At worst, they find somebody who does just as shit a job as Bay, who makes just as much money, and we're in the same place we are now.
On the other hand, IDW's been proving that you can write some damn good stories about giant stompy robots. If they get someone who actually tries to do them justice we could have some great movies.

Most of the actually good versions of Transformers have significant human characters.Crazedwraith wrote:Thing is to me. If you're going to live action Transformers. The difference is that they have Transformer characters as well, which is not something that you could ever accuse the Bay movies of doing.
I mean really, we've just had a movie where a tree who can only say "I am Groot" had more personality than basically all of the Bay Transformers put together.
Re: Transformer 5 will not be Bay
The first Bayformers movie wasnt bad. And I put it down to having better human characters.
The first one at least had Anthony Anderson and Rachel Taylor as a significant C plot.
Also compare Rachel taylor and Meagan Fox's characters in movie 1 both of whom actually did stuff and Nicola Peltz in movie 4 who spent her entire time screaming for help.

Yes, it was bad.xerex wrote:The first Bayformers movie wasnt bad. And I put it down to having better human characters.

It was bad because it didn't just have a C plot, it had D, E, and F plots as well and none of them were developed properly _at all_.
It had a million characters, none of which were Transformers (who were _there_ but weren't characters), and none of them gave us any incentive to give a shit about them whatsoever.
It's only because the second one redefined what it _means_ to be a bad movie (with literally _every_ character being the comic relief _all at once_, and going from seven plots to half a plot) that the first one seems to be not bad.
Re: Transformer 5 will not be Bay
Either way we all know what, or rather who, is eventually going to show up. 4 movies with no Unicron???
EDIT: Not that I actually want to see how they manage to f&*k him up, but he'll def be making an appearance at some point. After all, what can be bigger and more explodey than him?
