Yeah, he tried to remake Alien with his script. The studio wanted Aliens. So it did 't quite work.

He also wrote a climax with the Aliens in a forest on Earth, which the studio cut to his dismay, and he didn't write anything about the "newborn" and hated it.

Whedon has said outright that the crew of the Betty was a precursor to the more developed Serenity crew. He was unhappy with how A:R executed the script and refined the characters into Firefly. So...
