Protocols for a Thing

Post by Ahriman238 »

With that weird sort of synergy that happens sometimes, I was marathoning Agents of Shield to catch up and saw episode where Agent 33, a face-changer, infiltrates a military base around the same time that a fic popped up here, Why We Aren't All Things.

So idea, in a world where the Thing is a thing or equivalent metamorph, what would the best procedure be if you suspected infiltration by the same? I mean, in the film and in DS9, blood tests worked but those could be spoofed with sufficient effort and processing an entire military base could take a while (see also the SG-1 episode where Anubis as a possessing entity invades the SGC) so what do you do in the mean-time? Lock down the base? Groups of three, four, or more? Detain anyone found where they shouldn't be, particularly high-ranking officers?

Easiest method is pre-arranged lock down procedures if your worried about Thing protocols then sealing rooms in groups of two (Where one room can watch another room and vice-versa) along with strong entry screening procedures. A doppelganger protocol if you will, everyone report to lockdown, if you don't report to your lockdown area we assume your not you but a doppleganger.

Clearly you ban orange foam costumes and bad CGI rock monsters and BAM problem solved, no more Thing.

Really though, isolation and outside control is the best solution. If you know you have the possibility of a Thing infiltrating your ranks you'd want complete quarantine preferably in something like the SGC. All systems such as security, cameras, life support, and even plumbing should instantly be re-routed to a offsite control location. The off-site control location would also be responsible for monitoring the base, viewing all the cameras watching for abnormalities. With a shit-ton of cameras with no blindspots (which would suck for privacy but I think most people would rather be recording taking a shit then get some alien tentacle monsters going all bad touch hentai on them), a few people watching the monitors, and modern image recognition software any shape shifter would be unable to take more victims without being seen. If cameras go down then that would be an automatic lockdown.

The facility should also have sections that can be locked down with their own independent life support. Worse comes to worse you seal off a section and pump some nasty shit in their sure to kill anything including Pvt Johnsons stinky athletes foot (and the feet too). Sucks but better for some to die the the entire facility.

For a normal military base, especially one near a populated area, containment would be hard bordering on impossible. Military bases are not fortresses and might have just a chainlink fence protecting it from the outside world if even that. Will be full of plants and probably shittons of animals like squirrels, deer, birds, and other animals.

Maybe a relatively isolated desert base would be able to contain the problem and initiate quarantine procedures but even then deserts aren't lifeless.

Probably the most important thing when going into lockdown is to have whatever control group watching the place and handling quarantine and testing to be very ruthless. To echo what others have said, have a protocol in place that has personnel go to assigned locations. People not in their assigned places will be considered hostile. Suspected infiltrators are to be completely isolated. Troops who run the Q&T show will be required to stay in full NBC gear during the duration and will be required to have their equipment inspected before being allowed back in clean areas. If their is even a minor tear in their suits they are to be isolated. If they resist they are to be put down. Long range incendiary weapons are a must.

The occasional person would be killed because they lost their shit during a lockdown and thats a sucky situation but much as I hate to say it a good trade-off when the entire human race is at stake of being alien steak.

Probably be great when robotics is advanced enough that people can remotely pilot a humanoid drone into such situations as their would be less reason to arbitrarily execute people. With drones that can't infected one can afford to be cautious.
