I'm actually really looking forward to this. Sue me :P

Actually that does look kinda cool :D
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

That...doesn't make me immediately hate it. If Jeff Goldblum is in it, then it can't be terrible. :)

Edit - and it brought back most of the original cast.

Wait, Brent Spiner? Wasn't his character killed?

Maybe it's his brother. Or some prototype carrying his memories....

Whilst I am eager to see how this turns out, the main thing worrying me is that Roland Emmerich appears to have disappeared up his own arse in recent years. Day After Tomorrow was probably the last film of his I actually enjoyed, but it weren't no masterpiece.

I'm hoping they keep the optimism and humour from the first film rather than it being grimdark all the way.

I am going to treat this as a vehicle for laser guns and space battles with a sprinkle of disaster porn. It looks good on that account. If they can avoid any of the BS Randy Quaid shenanigans or a 2012 "Look daddy I learned to use the bathroom!" lines I will call it a win.

Agreed — the original tried a bit too hard to tick all the trope boxes, bit it was saved by the funny bits, at least enough for me to enjoy it. I'm prepared to wait and see what this new one's like.

I think the first one wonderfully executed all the tropes so it came out as a very good action movie.

The new trailer has me worried, because it seems to be more by the numbers with a healthy dose of sucking up to the few scenes in the original film that were actually good.

This is pretty cool.

Minor spoilers obviously, but it has some info on what happened after the alien invasion etc. Set up like it's supposed to be an introductory historical overview of the 20 years post war.

For those of us who don't recognize the faces, who is it President Whitmore is meeting with on March 17th, 1998 to establish a global government? I think that's President George H.W. Bush on the far left, but I'm having trouble recognizing the others.

The middle one is Boris Yeltsin, second from the right is Tony Blair. The guy behind and to the left of Yeltsin is Jacques Chirac.

The franchise definitely has a lot of room for potential growth and worldbuilding. Think about it - a whole "new" (after a 20 year break) sci-fi universe, unburdened from source material like Marvel or existing lore like Star Wars. They could do literally anything - why not have Earth discover and appeal for help from a wider galactic community somewhere down the line? It could be a great story of humanity establishing itself as a regional power in space, something akin to Stargate's arc, only with gargantuan budgets and way more action :P

If they set things up right, the ID universe could run and run.

What's interesting is how comically they dealt with Will Smith not being in the movie. They just fucking blew him up. :)

Indeed! I had a dry chuckle over that one myself. Still, this is sci-fi. I'm sure they'll find a way to crowbar him back into the franchise if he wants back in at some point.

Someone on Reddit has gone through the viral site and put together a list of destroyed cities. Some odd choices in here

Historical irony that Hiroshima was the first city destroyed by a WMD but also the first Japanese city saved from one.

...was it me or did that ship at the end look like it covered a quarter of the globe, something ridiculously big like that?
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Well Levinson DID say it was a lot bigger than the first one...and the first one was 1/4 the size of the moon.

That was my impression, that it was impossibly enormous. Perhaps the film was going for "over the top" in terms of spaceship scale.

Not to the mention massive cloud formations in the atmosphere being sucked in through either gravity or whatever their equivalent of exhaust is. Yeah, that thing is fucking HUGE.

I'm actually surprised I have anything left in the Hype Tank what with SW coming out THIS FUCKING WEEK, but Civil War, BvS and now this have somehow made room for themselves in my brain :P

It looks quite good actually, I think exploring this alternative history route after the first film could be very promising.

In regards to will smith not being in this, there's truth in that the studios refused to pay him $50 million as he demanded, but is it also true he wanted his kids written into this? if that's so I can understand the studio saying no full stop especially given 'After earth'

It's a good thing they don't need Smith. And certainly not his actual kids. We do not need more After Earth indeed with such 'talent' at the wheel.

It looks like that Will's character's kid would likely make sense for that new fighter pilot character we get a brief glimpse of. It allows to narratively advance the same threads from the first movie (with Goldblum, and Former President Lonestar) without tying it nearly as tightly to the exact cast.

I find it just a little incredible that NATO's response to some random assholes in the Congo saying "Nah, we got this," when offered help with killing the aliens that had just blown up half the major cities in the alliance would be anything other than "NOPE," followed by a bombing campaign.
