Re: what is the practical range of the battletech wepons and
BattleTech weapons are difficult to judge fairly, because in the BT Universe there are a lot of factors which are handled abstractly in the game system. These run the complete gamut from the "assault rifle effect" of rapid-firing weapons to crippling electronic warfare.Lt. To my knowledge, there are two canon sets of range: the ranges in the BattleTech land warfare game and the ranges in the AeroTech space combat game. In real life, the ranges would lie somewhere in-between; the EW environment of BT that causes so many problems in terms of effective range wouldn't be present, but gravitational and atmospheric effects would probably ensure that the ranges would be shorter than are listed in AeroTech.
A good example is the Amsterdam Large Laser on the PXH-HK2 Phoenix Hawk. Its a good example because the PXH-HK2, as a transforming machine, fights both on land as a 'mech and in space as a fighter.
In outer space, the Amsterdam has a maximum range of more than 250 kilometers. When the PXH-HK2 enters the atmosphere, this range drops to 7.6 kilometers, and when the PXH-HK2 is either strafing the ground at NOE or actuall fighting on land as a 'mech, the effective range is reduced to 450 meters (as much as 600 meters in the hands of an extremely skilled pilot).
I hope this goes a way to answer your question.
Some other common weapons are listed below - range is (ground/NOE, high atmosphere, outer space);
Magna Medium Laser: 270 meters / 4.6 km / 153 km
Martell Small Laser: 90 meters / 1.5 km / 51 km
Holly Short Range Missile: 270 meters / 4.6 km / 153 km
Banzai!
I don't play the rpg so can't give you mech weapons. However from the novels we find out that the average used personal weapons on a day to day basis are needler pistols which are like mini shot guns. While how they work exactly is a mystery we know they take plastic and cut it into sharp pieces and shoots them out. They can achieve the range of an average pistol. Lasers have a range less than average modern rifle, and burngood sized holes in targets, their main advantage over rifle is the minuturazation(sp?) of them, I.e. Justin Allards arm laser built inside a working prosthetic arm, yet it still has firepower equal to rifle.

Practical range?
The longest-ranged weapon in the game (short of artillery) is the clan LB-2X: it has a range of 30 hexes. One hex = 30 meters, so the LB-2X has an effective range of 900 meters. So like RayCav said, the effective range (the range where you have a PRAYER IN HELL of hitting something) is under a kilometer. Even then, the "average" Inner Sphere (and Clan) pilot will miss more often than they hit at that range. The best chance in the game you have of hitting something at "long range" is Clan large pulse lasers (max. effective range of 600m) with a targeting computer.
Realistic range for a battletech engagement (meaning the range at which you're shooting something other than the landscape) is more like 90-300m for the inner sphere and 300-450m for the Clans. The culmulative modifiers for long range, movement, and cover are horrendous and the odds of hitting something at the "max" ranges for 'mech weapons are slim (1-2%, a lot of the time.)

The minimal chance ( greater than ZERO ) to hit something in BTech is 1/36 or ~2.8 % ( 2 time six on a dice ).beyond hope wrote:Practical range?
