Gainax, Weta, and ADV teaming up for film
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Variety.com (original article only available to subscribers--free trial available), reporting from the Cannes Film Festival, reports that Gainax, Weta, and ADV are teaming up to produce a live action film based on Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Gainax and ADV Films should be instantly recognizable to any anime fan as the studio that created Evangelion and ADV as the studio that owns the worldwide rights to the TV series and localized it for North American audiences. Weta Workshop, however, may not be a familiar name. Weta is the New Zealand studio set up by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson to handle the special effects for the LOTR trilogy.

Adding complete credibility to this story is the quote from ADV Films president and co-founder John Ledford: "The three main players here represent something of a dream team for a project like this. Between the quality and significance of Gainax, Weta's industry-leading skill in visual effects and our expertise in the marketing and promotion of anime and anime-related content, this project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

To top it off, while the film is still in early development, Ledford mentions an "aggressive timetable."

Neon Genesis Evangelion joins a growing list of titles, including Kite, Dragonball Z, Battle Angel, and Lupin III, that are rumored or confirmed to have live-action remakes in the works.

ANN has confirmed this story with ADV Films.
While I'm very happy that GAiNAX will be in charge and Weta will be doing the effects, I still have severe reservations about a film such as this being made (although I'd be murderously furious if GAiNAX wasn't involved and it was just some bullshit American studio making all of the choices).

What I really hope for is that the end product doesn't come out all "Yankee'fied", and that nothing is sacrificed just to make it more marketable and "audience friendly" (such as making the Children each be something like 18 instead of 14...).

But be very afraid. We'll have an all new breed of Stupid Evangelion Fan, with an all new strain of Fucking Stupid hard-wired into their brains...

I for one will be on the front lines.

And I'm still slightly pissed off about this... :banghead:

A live action Cowboy Bebop can't be far off, with the Wachowski Brothers directing, hopefully.

Didn't Gainax already produce a live action episode that was available exlusively on the Japanese DVDs? If so, how was it?

Hmm. I wonder if it'll be a retelling of the series or something.

I'm not sure I understand how they could possibly translate DBZ to life-action without having it look really really weird.

I know a hell of a lot more than you do, for one thing, Shep. Mr. "I've only seen six episodes"...

For one thing, Shep, everyone involved with Eva has said that EoE was the last that was going to be made, with there being no more to tell.

This film will obviously be either a remake or a retelling of the series, you dim-watted bulb...

Ergo: I am still right. Check and mate, Shep. :P

How they an possibly tell a tale as rich and complex as Eva is beyond me. Especially in movie format. If they're going to make a single movie they will need to cut out ALOT to tell it in under two hours and I have no idea who this will work unless what they do is just tell a single story of fighting an angel and see if it generates a buzz worthy of making sequels...but otherwise I just don't see how they will do the series justice.

Update Spanky, I'm now finished watching DVD 7, the episode where Shinji is pulled out of the Eva after merging with it. I am pleasantly surprised how this series is going and very happy with it.

On a side note, has anyone of you seen Hideaki Anno's other movies? The only one I saw was Love and Pop, about Japanese high school girls being enjoukosai's.

Compressing Evangelion into two and a half hours would NOT be pretty.
I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. I, sir, am a wizard, and I break more natural laws before breakfast than of which you are even aware!

Frankly, I am not optimistic about this movie's prospects.
