Warhammar 40k ship sizes.

Post by starfury »

there have many conflicting reports on the size of Warhammar 40k ships, I remenber them being on the low-end up to 6 km for even the large battleships but on the high end they are as large soverigan command
which are easily 9 to 10 miles long for the battleships like the emperor class.

ships, just which size estimates should be use :?:

A quick skim of the Battle Fleet Gothic book yeilded no useful information about that subject - novels may have something different and specific in mind though - and I've yet to read a 40K novel of any kind. Just split the difference and go with a middle ground number - at least that's what I'd do.

All we know is that the Imperium's Dictator-class Cruisers (and variants) are 3km long and that Emperor-class Battleships are roughly 6 km long.

However, there are also:

Vengeance-class and Repulsive-class Grand Cruisers, which are bigger than a cruiser but smaller than a battleship. I believe the outdated Repulsive-class to be the biggest. It is also no longer in service of the Imperium, but many anti-Imperial rebels use it.

Dauntless-class Light Cruiser. I originally speculated this to be 2250m long, but after finding out that models are to scale, all we know that it's a great deal smaller than a Dictator-class, but still is a capital ship.

Sword-class and Firestorm-class Frigates. Size estimates for these escort ships range from 300m to 1400m!!

Cobra-class Destroyer. Size estimates for this one ranges from 200m to 1000m.

It also makes IoM escorts around the size of an ISD

Also means most tyranid cap ships will have claws either several times as long, or a good proportion of the size of an ISD 8)

The latest statement that I have seen regarding the size of BFG starships is that battleships can range up to 8km long. This comes from the article on fighting boarding actions in WH40K from the September White Dwarf.

Actually, if the BFG models are to scale, the IoM's escort ships will be 2km long!! That's even bigger than an Imperator!!!

However, aren't the Emperor-class Battleships established to be 6km long???

I don't know for Abaddon's Planet-Killer ship, but it can be anywhere between 6 and 20 km....
