Well, a protocol droid would be nice, but its attitude had better be better than 3P0. Babelfish is cool too, but I just wouldn't relish putting something in my ear, especially after having to catch it on my towel which I placed over the grate in the corner.

I agree about the translator microbes. Nothing external to lose, get broken, or have vacuumed out of your ear... for that matter, nothing to put in your ear. Plus their failure to translate some words (actually, I think it's strong or complex emotion that overwhelms them: IIRC, in one episode a Peacekeeper officer explains to a subornidate that Pilot, if overly emotional, is untranslatable; also, at least once paragraph-length speech by D'Argo has been untranslable while he was particularly emotional).
Not to mention that you don't have to deal with some pansy droid's personality.Mr. Mister wrote:I agree about the translator microbes. Nothing external to lose, get broken, or have vacuumed out of your ear... for that matter, nothing to put in your ear.
Huh! That's a good point! I never thought of that.Plus their failure to translate some words (actually, I think it's strong or complex emotion that overwhelms them: IIRC, in one episode a Peacekeeper officer explains to a subornidate that Pilot, if overly emotional, is untranslatable; also, at least once paragraph-length speech by D'Argo has been untranslable while he was particularly emotional).

Droids are so tedious, especially the depressed ones that sit in corners and mope about having a brain the size of a planet but not being able to use it. Blah blah blah.
I prefer good old fashioned people translating. Makes it so much more realistic. :p

I would take my own bastard hybrid of translator microbes and a babelfish. I would be able to alter the level of accuracy in the translation, from the limited capabilities of the microbes to the very accurate translation of the babelfish. I would be able to understand the most obscure and complicated languages, and be immune to Vogon poetry.

Because the Translater Microbes refuse to process things that are too emotionally invovled, so they wouldn't bother with the translation as a result of the microbes would just refuse to translate, purhaps dieing in the process.

I think that one of the characteristics of Vogon poetry is that being unable to understand it doesn't make it any less awful.Stormbringer wrote:How do you know? Ok, essentially the Microbes and the Babel Fish are the same, at least in function: they are more or less permanent, they intrude into a person's body. In the case of the Farscape microbes, I'm pretty sure the translation is one-sided (just because you're infected doesn't allow you to talk other people's languages). Not sure about the babelfish, it might make you talk also.
A side effect would be that once you are affected by either, you will be completely unable to actually learn a different language, because it will always sound like your own, mostly.
So it depends. I'd rather try to learn languages by myself and resort to some external means if I can't (like a droid) than having something alien in my brain.
