Wrong type of unit. Watts = power, tonnes TNT = energy.

1e9w = 0.24 tons/sec.

Assuming a continous wave laser. The numbers will be different for a pulsed laser.

Wasn't there an episode in TNG where it was stated that lasers do no damage to ST shields?

If we assume 100GW means 100GJ/s and not 50GJ/0.5s then it is 0,02 kilotons a second.

Doesn't matter really, the whole concept of laser invulneraribility is nutso.

In the same way, one could say that the Force is nutso. But it's canon.

And still wrong, as in incorrect, wrong interpreptation of said events.

They said something like "that won't even penetrate our navigational deflectors"

Thats clearly in regards to power, not to their nature, if so there is no reason they should be in danger from being too near a star or intense EM radiation or why they should be afraid of laser fire in another episode.

The difference between power and total energy transferred is quite important. There are petawatt lasers knocking about even now.

Good point.

Anyway, I think there was one TNG episode where the E-D was being fired at by a 400 or something gigawatt weapon and it damaged them semi-severely.

100 GW = 0.02 KT, eh?

I think everyone can say: "ST has just made a big boo-boo."

They were hit by a 400gigawatt pulse  and it collapsed the sheilds. 2 seconds of this...

Howver Shinova its not canon as later on in the seires when two planets go to war using LASER weapons Picard withdraws the ship "Because he won't put his ship in danager"

Now if his ship is immune to lasers why would he think his ship is in danger?

Furthermore they have taken damage before from many diffrent laser weapons too as well, The Epsiode you refer to is called the Outragius Otakua If I remeber and its completly descirted

Oh and Turbolasers (=/) Lasers (Or is that what you ment by the ! mark, I've never seeen it written that way)

Note, Picard himself is immune to lasers, his bald head reflects them with 100% efficency.

Erm you mean that a laser can now produce megaton-ranged energy within a small amount of time ? Sorry, last time I checked, the Nova-laser array, the most powerful laser used in thermonuclear fusion experiments, was rated at 300 TW... and functions during 2 nanoseconds. Translate this into appropriate units yourself. Gigawatt-ranged lasers are still considered insanely powerful with our current technology. But I could be outdated. However I don't think so.

Not at all. Immunity to visible light lasers requires you to twist all visible light around you, like a SW style cloak. Shields do -not- do this, so it's not canon. The nav deflectors probably contribute some tiny amount of heat-dissipation protection, which is what they mean.

I said that lasers exist that have power outputs at the petawatt level, nothing about the total energy transferred. The actual beam duration is of course on the order of nanoseconds, probably less. I don't know about the US, but Vulcan in the UK is being upgraded

http://www.clf.rl.ac.uk/news/clf_news/vulcan_page.htm

I would be really surprised if the US didn't have something similar either now or soon.

About zilliawatt ranged lasers

Post by The Nomad »

Of course when you mentionned petawatt-ranged lasers, I thought you were meaning that the pulse could actually be maintained for at least 1 sec...
