David Weber

I was just wondering what people with more science knowledge than me think about David Weber's Honor Harrington series (other than the impellers, which appear to me to be obvious fiction designed to create a pseudo-realistic reactionless drive). Any takers?

DW designed the starships and the drive systems so they resemble napoleonic naval warfare ships, since Honor Harrington series is more or less Horatio Hornblower in space.
Thus you have Ships of the Wall (instead of Ships of the Line), massive broadsides, etc.

I like Weber's stuff. I just finished his "March Upcountry/to the Sea" bit and I thought it was great writing, granted March to the Sea was pretty much March Upcountry revisited but it was an excellent story to revisit.

Well, he wanted to recreate naval warfare with sail ships 3000 years in the future.
The wedges are what he came up with, and they do work fairly well in that respect...

Only inasmuch as forch shields are plot devices. The difference being that they are well defined and documented and they work logically from their premise. One of my pet peeves is when a new technology is introduced for one bit of equipment and then not carried on to other devices where it would bring great enhancements.
