Good Sci-Fi Movies

Post by HemlockGrey »

Recomend some. However, I already know about

-Alien
-Star Wars
-Star Trek
-Terminator
-Road Warrior
-Water World
-Mission to Mars
-Mars Attacks
-Spaced Invaders
-Apollo 13
-Galaxy Quest

So don't bother to mention those. I'm mostly looking for more 'high tech' space-opera action-stuff; in the same vein as Firefly, Wars, and Alien rather than Mission to Mars or Apollo 13. No comedys, either.
The End of Suburbia
"If more cars are inevitable, must there not be roads for them to run on?"
-Robert Moses

"The Wire" is the best show in the history of television. Watch it today.

You realize that Apollo 13 in no way qualifies as Sci-Fi right?

But anyways...

-Pitch Black (really little mreo than an Aliens Tribute, but a good tribute)

-Last Starfight (Old cheesy, corny, etc... but fun none-the-less)

-Transfomers the Movie (Because hey, it's the Transformers :D )

-Final Fantasy (for the CG animation if nothing else, but still asolid sci-fi)

-Blade Runnner (Classic stuff)

-Ghost in the Shell (Cyberpunk, animated but with a more complicated and sophistcated plot than most live action moives)

-Titan A.E. (Animated but lotsa fun)

-Predator 1&2 (hehe, just watch 'em)

-Fifth Element (Die Hard in Space, with a cute half-naked chick sidekick)

-Dark City (Freaky as all hell)

-Matrix (Don't tell me you've never seen it?)

-Macross Plus (It's like kinda like Top Gun... but with better fighters, better dogfights, better music, a better story, and no homoeroticvolleyball scene!)

I agree, definitely watch The Last Starfighter. The best scenes are the ones with the clone (it's a side plot, so that's not a spoiler).

If you can find either Gundam 0081 or Gundam 0083, those are (IMHO) the best space-based anime series other than Macross Plus.

Gattaca.

If you can withstand the fact that it's nothing like the book, Starship Troopers is pretty good. If you liked the societal analysis by Heinlein in the novel, skip the movie, it's mostly a war movie.

Can't think of any others right now, but I may post more later.

Babylon 5: In the Beginning. Ok, it's a tv movie, but it's still a movie and it's good.

Oh yeah, most Godzilla movies, except for the American one.

I thought that Godzilla vs. The Giant Space Vagina was quite funny. Okay, that's not the true title but I don't remember what it is. And at the end it looks like he is fighting and then giving oral to a Giant Space Vagina.

It's not supposed to be porn. It's just so frigging funny watching a guy in a rubber suit go at it with a Giant Space Vagina. If I wanted real porn I'd get it off the Internet.

That's true. It'd be funny in a pathetic sort of way.

It's the one with Arnie, amnesia and mutants on Mars. I got it on DVD, not bad.

Just my two cents worth:

Logan's Run.

Independence Day.

Men in Black.

Ok, it was three cents worth!
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Exactly. I'm not a sick twisted freak who gets off on watching a guy in a rubber suit go at it with a Giant Space Vagina. Well I am a sick twisted freak, but that's another story.

Thanks Raxmei, I think that's it.

Oh yeah, I thought of some more:

Avalon - The Polish/Japanese joint, not the American movie that has the same name.

The Abyss - Cool watery stuff

Cube - Well it's only kind of sci-fi

Robocop - Which I think is kind of sci-fi

Here's a list of really good SF movies:
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Solaris (the original Russian film directed by Andre Tartkovsky and one of the most beautiful SF films ever made)
  • Blade Runner (director's cut, of course)
  • The Day The Earth Stood Still
  • Forbidden Planet (even after all these years, that movie still holds up well)
  • Gattaca
  • Metropolis
  • Nineteen Eighty-Four (the 1984 version, naturally, with John Hurt and Richard Burton in his last role; very faithful to the book)
  • War Of The Worlds
  • Earth v. The Flying Saucers
  • Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
  • Alien
  • Aliens
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • 2010
  • Repo Man
  • The Matrix
  • Planet Of The Apes (the 1968 original —not that abomination starring Mark Wahlberg)
  • Star Wars ANH
  • Galaxy Quest
  • Dark Star
  • Five Million Years To Earth
  • The Monolith Monsters
  • Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
  • Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones
  • Dune
  • The Thing
  • The Time Machine
  • Farenheit 451

1984 - Not strictly sci-fi. But still good.

2001 - Classic.

2010 - Classic.

A Clockwork Orange - Not strictly sci-fi, but to leave it out would be a crime.

Abyss (spec ed only) - Brilliance, but ONLY EVER watch the spec ed. The original is like ET underwater.

Akira - Unbelieveable. I love it.

Alien - Classic.

Aliens (spec ed only) - Spec ed recommended for further plot insights.

Barbarella - Awww cmon! You know you love it! I mean, shagpile carpet on a ship... And thats not the only shag...

Cool World - If you haven't seen it. Find it. And then take drugs. THEN watch this movie.

Cowboy Bebop - It has movies... It qualifies!

Cube - Human nature is great.

The Day the Earth Stood Still - One word: GORT.

Fareinheight 451 - America two years into Bush's second term.

Final Fantasy - Not a great movie, but some great moments and DAMN is it shiny.

The Forbidden Planet - Another classic movie, with another classic robot.

Galaxy Quest - A great parody.

The Last Starfighter - Classic. Sheer cheese.

Logans Run - Yes. Admit it. It was good.

Mad Max 1&2 - Before the Tina Turner debacle.

The Matrix - Overblown gunfights and baddies wearing suits? HELL YEAH!

Metropolis - Amazing work of cinema.

Moon 44 - Cmon, you know you love it.

Predator 1&2 - A guilty pleasure.

Robotech/Macross - A childhood watching this in the morning... Ah. So what if it isn't a movie... THERE WERE MOVIES INVOLVED! SHUT UP YOU DAMN NAZIS!

Soylent Green - Soylent green IS people.

Space Balls - Its Mel Brooks. Do I need another reason?

Star Wars (all of them) - Need I say more.

Terminator 1&2 - Great post-apocalyptic time-travelling fun.

Total Recall - Ah-Nuhld in brilliant form.

V - Hahhahahaha! Yes! V motherfucker! Damn reptilian alien scum! Resist!

War of the Worlds - Either the radioplay or the musical. The movies sucked.

Wings of Honneanimaise (sp?) - The most spectacular anime I've ever
seen. Second only to "Grave of the Fireflies" in terms of emotion too.

Thats about all I can think of for the moment...
