Palpatine becomes squishy man-paste.

The Balrogs are corrupted Maiar. Immortal beings from somewhere around the dawn of time that can't truly be 'killed', just corporeally inconvenienced.

Palpatine is a human with some funky powers.

Palpatine defeats the Balrog. They can be killed or at least their mortal shells destroyed. And a Dark Lord of the Sith like palpatine is more than able to do that.

Palpy lifts the sucker telekenetically and drops him down one of the chasms, and then continues his pleasant walk. I mean it's not as if the Balrogs can 'sneak' up on some one is it?
